Oily Skin - Huntsville,AL

In the past few months my face & hair seem to be more oily. I guess they always have been, but I'm noticing it more now & it's driving me crazy!!

I do have a horrible habit of touching my face & hair, especially around my forehead. I try not to, but I still end up doing it! My head will itch a lot too, so then I scratch....

What shampoo and facial cleaner would you recommend? It needs to be something fairly inexpensive that I can pick up at Wal Mart or Target, etc. Don't want to have to order it every time I need it lol

For the past few days I have tried letting the shampoo sit in my hair for a few mins & try not to scratch the scalp too much. And also only applying conditioner at the ends of my hair. My hair is very fine, straight, and long (a little passed my shoulders). I pretty much keep it up in a pony tail, don't ever style it or anything. And I do not wear makeup of any kind.

Perhaps there are some better products out there that I should be using?? I've never really always stuck with the same stuff. Pretty much buy whatever when one runs out. Right now I know the shampoo is Dove brand for damaged hair.

What can I do next?

Most of my oily skin is hormonal and genetic - doesn't matter what products I use, it's just the way I was created, so I have to deal with it.

I try to use little moisturizer on my face and only use powder (no foundation). Shy of talking to a dermatologist about it, there's really not much you can do. If you have a local store that sells Kiehl's products, I'm a big fan of their foaming non-detergent cleanser. It's slightly pricier per ounce than something from Target, but it's been really good at helping prevent as much oil. Some people say to do weekly masks, too, to draw out the oils - it hasn't helped me.

The touching your face part is less to do with the oils and more to do with the dirt - the over production of oils + dirt trapped in the pores = breakouts. I'm fortunate to be prone to those to.

I read in Real Simple a few years ago that Alanis Morissette's hair dresser uses baby powder in her hair to help her go an extra day without washing. I, personally, have to wash my hair daily because of the oil I produce naturally. Unfortunately, that, too, is genetic and hard to control with products.

I have oily skin and oily hair, too. I have found that using a plain bar soap that doesn't leave residue (I like Ivory) works best for me. I get compliments on my skin all the time and people asking me what I use and what kind of makeup. Covergirl Smoothers foundation and just a little powder. Niether one expensive. I also do the baby powder on the crown of my head sometimes. Coloring or perming hair can help, too. My hair dresser tells me to be "meaner" to my hair because it is so fine and thin. She means blow dry, hairspray, curling irons, etc. lol.

I would try an herbal shampoo. The more chemicals you use on your hair/skin, the more oily it becomes, especially as you use surfactants that pull more oil out. Here's one that might be worth looking into: http://www.herbal-provider.com/dandruff-shampoo.html

Another method I've used sometimes is to wash hair with baking soda and then rinse with apple cider vinegar. That kind of dries out my hair, so I'm thinking it might work for yours. Good luck!

I'm a hairstylist and also have oily skin. I absolutely must wash my hair every day, unlike a lot of people I know who can go a day or two without.

Be sure not to touch your face, and not to overwash it or use water that is too hot.

For a cleanser, "It's best to use the gentlest product you can find I actually put together a formula that uses a very low pH, which is effective at removing oil, and an amino fruit acid, which causes very little irritation."

Clay or mud masques can help, so use one once a week.

Also, moisturizers can help and so does using toners or astringents.

this is a really good article that has a lot of great advice:

you are going to laugh but give it a try and see.
The oil is from your inside. Drink plenty of water and start adding 1 tbsp organic apple cider vinegar with 1 tbsp honey in warm water or tea. Drink this once a day. This will get the PH balance in your body back to a more normal level and working out your oil problems. I have found, and this is just my "life learning" tip, that all things dealing with our body or mind are effected by what we put IN our bodies.
