My 12 year old daughter's hair is extremely oily! She has to wash it every day and could even wash it twice a day if she had time. I have never had oily hair, but my husband and his entire family has that greasy hair look. She has tried every dry shampoo out there, but I was wondering if there is anything else I can do to help her. I think the oily hair is also giving her this "smell." It is not bad, it is just different. I smell it whenever I walk into her room. It's kind of an aerosol hairspray smell, kind of sweet and peppery... Any advice?

What can I do next?

I have pretty much the same problem with my own hair. As crazy as it may sound, once I stopped eating dairy (due to an food intolerance/digestive issue I was having), I started waking up in the morning with hair that doesn't need to be washed. I've never before been one of those girls who didn't have to wash their hair first thing in the morning.

I would try shampoos like Aveda Rosemary Mint or Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree or simply a little Tea Tree Oil massaged into her scalp before shampooing. She will have to shower every day or night and wash her sheets weekly. You can also ask your Dr. She could have an over active thyroid. Good luck.

Check her diet. A natural shampoo would be helpful but take a look at what she is eating and make sure she is getting plenty of water, fruits, veggies, fiber and good proteins. A balanced diet or some help with supplementation is very helpful in bringing the body into balance.

Lot's of shampoos won't work for oily hair. I remember I used Aveda for a little while until my friend warned me that my hair looked greasy by 3pm every D.. I use Pantene right now because I also color my hair. Only use conditioner every once in awhile on the ends, not scalp. At your daughter's age, I probably never used conditioner....This may not occur to you to do, I change my pillow cases several times a week. I also bathed at night at that age or after a sport.

I know that overwashing can make oily hair worse, because it strips all the good oils too. I say try a good shampoo for oily hair, check with a hairstylist for a recommendation. And make sure to use conditioner only on the ends. Blowdrying can help too.

I have a good friend who has flat greasy hair by the end of the day. So do both her daughters. They keep body perms in their hair all the time to give it lift and not look so flat and slick, and she started doing this to her girls hair in Jr. High or before. If her hair is curly or wavy it might make it too curly but why not try it at the beginning of Summer so she's not in school so if it turns out bad very few will know.

Overwashing, overscrubbing, and massaging the scalp too much during washing can cause the oil gands to overproduce, which makes the hair even more oily. Also, using 'dry' shampoos can strip the hair of its natural oils, inducing overproduction of oils, so that too is counterproductive.

I have oily hair as well- as crazy as it sounds, moisturizing shampoos tame the oil production because I'm not stripping my hair. It's also affected by diet.
