opinions on if he should keep his baby teeth? what are his options? give us more info so we can share thoughts.
Hello.
I am the mother of a 15 year old son. He is missing 11 permanent teeth. We are in the ortho stage. I say let him keep those healthy baby teeth until (if and when) they cause a problem. What opinions are out there?
Thanks!

Well, my hubby is missing 5 and had his baby teeth pulled and fitted with a bridge.
What does your dentist/ortho say about the repercussions of keeping baby teeth through adulthood?
I'm missing two permanent molars. They never gave me an issue and my dentist said as long as they are ok to just let them be. She did say eventually they will fall out since they don't have the root structure of a permanent one. The first one fell out when I was about 24 in pieces and the other one fell out around 27 or 28. I was given choices about what to do. Either get a bridge or get posts drilled into my jaw and have a permanent structure put in place. At the time it was going to cost thousands of dollars and I had no dental insurance and no money to pay for it myself. I decided to not do anything because it really came down to money. I'm now 35 and have gaps where the tooths used to be. It doesn't bother me and I rarely get anything stuck but I'm sure it will cause some kind of problems in the future. 11 is a lot. I'm guessing this has been confirmed through x-rays. I think I would weigh the pros and cons of waiting. They all won't fall out at the same time and if you are waiting for one final tooth to fall before he has work done out you could be doing some damage to the gum line of the open areas.
I'm not sure keeping baby teeth is really a choice that is made is it? I know I'm missing my two top "canine" teeth as an adult. Its never been an issue with me and acutally, if they had come in, my mouth would have been incredibly crowded.
I have at least 8 permanent teeth that never developed. I also have at least one baby tooth still (possibly two) and I'm 44. My dentists' opinions have always been that's it's better to leave them since even though they are baby teeth they are still feeding the jaw bone (something your teeth do) and keeping it strong.
I'm guessing the problem they are anticipating is the baby teeth not holding up to the braces and breaking. Breaking a tooth is painful and having a broken tooth pulled is worse than having a whole one pulled. I broke another baby tooth when I was 16, and it had to be removed.
I would sit down and discuss with the dentist, orthodontist and your son what options you have for keeping those teeth if at all possible.
Good luck with everything.
I am 38 and still have three "baby" teeth. They look normal and are not discolored. They are wedged in so tightly with my other teeth that I never had a problem with them.
