Odor Issues

This is embarrassing, but short of calling the Doctor, I thought I'd ask on here first. Lately I noticed I've had a odor coming from my "woman area". I used to douche, but the doctor told me that it is unhealthy to do so. Now, I have an IUD so I do not want to chance any sort of infection. I clean daily with soap and water but it doesn't seem to help much. Does anyone have suggestions on safe things to use?

What can I do next?

One tip I got from my doctor (surprisingly enough) was actually NOT to use soap "down there"... He said that although it might be cleaner for a few seconds, soap actually kills the good bacteria and can cause more odor and itching. I found it to be true... You might want to check up on the IUD though-foreign bodies can always increase your risk for infection. Good luck!
I also sometimes use the Monistat wipes... They help you feel a little fresher throughout the day too.

I don't have and IUD, but I do have some trouble with odor occasionally. I can't use ANY soap with fragrance or anything like that, or by the end of the day I want another shower! I use an unscented feminine wash for sensitive skin and it has made a world of difference for me.

Also look at your diet, if your overdoing it on a certain food (in the summer I can't get enough citrus), it can change your bodily fluids too.

Hi R.,
I find I have an offensive odor when I use regular soap to wash with, but when I use a feminine wash I don't have an issue. Summers Eve and also Walmart an Target brands work well and I have used it for years.

Hi R.,
After I had my 3rd child, I had strong odor coming out of my feminine area too. I didn't have any other symptoms like pain or itching or fever. I talked to my doctor and he said it was probably an overgrowth of bacteria. He gave me a cream to put inside my vagina (a one time dose) and it took care of the problem. Ask your doctor...

Hi!
I had a copper IUD put in this summer and my midwife told me if their was an odor to call the office. I think it could mean an infection...but I would definitly call your health care provider. And don't bother being embarressed, its no big deal to them!

Hi R.. I too have an IUD. Since i've had the IUD i've had about 3 bacterial infections. My symptoms were the same but with a watery discharge. I'd call your doctor and make sure things are okay.

Hi R.,

I agree with the other mothers. You probably do have an infection. When I was preg with my 3rd, I kept on getting yeast infections, and I felt like I couldn't go 24 hrs before another bath. I was just producing too much yeast from all the meds I had to take and the hormones. I felt so dirty, and wore (unscented) panty liners, which I changed a whole lot more often than I normally would, without infection. Even with the panty liners, I still felt that the "odor" permeated through my clothing. I was embarrassed even to sit too close to my husband, who always assured me that he couldn't "smell" anything. My doc was very nice, and prescribed me creams to insert (down there). Each time (because it happened several times over the 8 mo course) I had to use it once a day, for 3-5 days. Don't be embarrassed, and don't suffer any more by letting it lie, and trying to find a solution without seeing your doc. Go see your doc!! :o)

R.,
Maybe you have a slight yeast infection. You can buy a test over the counter. If not though, I would call your doctors office, sometimes the nurse can give you ideas of what to do or if tell you if they want you to come right in. Good luck!
