I know this is a crazy question since it is only February but here it goes.
My children's school is thinking of hosting an Octoberfest fundraiser. I am on the fundraising committee so I am trying to do a little research.
1. Has anyone ever been to or organinzed a successful Octorberfest fundraiser?
2. Was it just food or was entertainment involved?
3. What are must haves for this fundraiser?
4. Anything that should be avoided?
Alcohol is not a problem...we have other fundraiser where alcohol is also involved.
I know I am asking a lot...any information would be helpful!

I grew up in Germany and now we attend local Oktoberfests frequently. Oktoberfest is generally a celebration of beer. Is that going to be an issue for a school fundraiser? Just some food for thought.
Since I lived in Germany - i can tell you that Oktoberfest takes place the from the middle of September (17th to 20th) to the 2nd or 3rd of October (usually 16 days of celebration). do you know the history of Oktoberfest? It started in 1810 with Prince Luwig married Princess Therese of Bavaria and the whole city celebrated!!
I've not had an Oktoberfest fundraiser but it would be something I would be interested in doing!!
Food would be
Bratwursts/Sausage
Pulled Pork
BEER!! (can't do that at school!!)
Sauerkraut
Radishes and Horseradish
Pickles
Games:

We go to Oktoberfest annualy - LOVE it. We have taken our kids some years and other years we left them home. The one we attend has a weiner dog race. Is that possible to do? It is so fun to watch!

Definitely need pastries YUM! And ours does have a few kiddy rides for the kids.
Yodeling contest? $20 for a chance to yodel in front of the crowd.
German horn ticket raffle. Pick a ticket each hour. If your ticket is picked, you can blow the alpenhorn (like in the Ricola commercial).
Must haves - beer, ale, beer steins, sausage, and leiderhosen for the men.
find a polka band. There are usually bands, dancers in traditional dress, and I have seen some old fashioned rides made of wood. Wagon hay rides would be fun.
Hey a thought on the beer -- have root beer!
See if you can get a few rides. (kind of carnival like)
Pick your foods but do include the bratwurst and rolls (brochen) with mustard.
The German dress and drindl skirts and leiderhosen (Burda has a pattern for leiderhosen)
Felt hats
Polka band sounds like lots fun.

rides. Oktoberfest is a blast. Google Munich Oktoberfest and see what they have going on and go from there.

We live in Lockport and our Parish, St. Joseph, has an annual Octoberfest which is their main fundraiser for the year. There's a carnival, craft fair, pig roast, bake sale, food sales, beer tent, and a casino tent. I can't remember the names of the women on the committee, but I'm sure if you contact the school they'd be happy to provide some information. You might even be able to look it up online. I know they start planning really early. At our annual Religious Ed meeting in August we get a packet of information on it. They have raffles and ask for advertising to off set costs. It's a huge deal.

All good suggestions. I am German and I never ever owned a Dirndel or even wore one or would ever put on lol. My motto is if your are not Bavarian and live somewhere in the Alps do not put on a Dirndel or Lederhosen ( eww). One thing that you could make in advance and is super easy are Potatoe pancakes served with applesauce. My onion pie or Zwiebelkuchen is legendary and is a hit with the American relations. This is also easy to prep. One last note... the Alpenhorn is Swiss, yodeling is Bavarian.
If you are a Facebook user search for " German Goodies" and "like" the page. There are a many knowledgeable German and German/Americans that are willing to share suggestions and recipies.
