Hello Mama's,

My son has food aversion with food sensory issues (has been diagnosed and had therapy for it). We are still working on having him eat meats and vegetables (he currently doesn't eat any). I will be seeing my son's pedi and will be asking for a referral to either a nutritionist or dietician the problem is I don't know what to ask for because I don't know what the difference is between the two and what services they can do for my son. Have any of you mom's used either a nutritionist or a dietician for your children? Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

I'm not at all sure. A registered dietician should work with a hospital or doctor group and have a bachelors degree. My daughter is going to become a registered dietician. After that a person can go on and get a masters. But I don't know what a nutritionist has. Seems like either one should be able to help you though.

Sometimes, they are considered the same.

I know when I seen a dietician, on the outside of the door it says 'Nutritionist'. All registered dieticians have a degree in nutrition. You can work at a health food store and be called a nutritionist and not have a degree.

If you get referred from your doctor, they are more then likely going to be the same people, but with a degree. It just depends on what you want to call them. Dieticians work on dieting, nutrition, healthy living and ways to eat good for you food.

Hope that helps.

(seeing the word nutrition a few times, totally makes me think it's spelled the wrong way lol)

Edited to add: My cousins son is autistic and he sees a dietician regularly to help him and his parents get him the right food and ways to make the right food so he eats it.

Hi L.,

Ask for a clinical nutritionist. They will help with diet as well as test for missing nutrients, enzymes, amino acids and such. Sometimes the digestive system just needs a jump start and they would be the one to know.
