My mom wants to make me a nursing cover for my next child, which I think is great. But I'm not sure how big to tell her to make it. I've looked at the dimensions of the ones you can buy in the store and on how-to blogs online and they all have different dimensions. So, for those of you out there who have them, how big is yours and do you like that size--would you go bigger or smaller?

What can I do next?

I would invest in one Hooter Hider or Bebe au Lait brand and use it as a template. They held up through 2.5 yrs of frequent use (I have teen stepkids and preferred to use it at home, too), as long as they didn't go in the dryer. The size was good, too, and the pocket was handy. The material was lightweight without being see-through. You might also consider linen as it is a very breathable fabric.

I'm not nursing BUT if I may tell you about an alternative option...I saw this mother nursing her baby and the baby had this oversized floppy baby hat on his head. All the mothers around her commented on it and she said it is a special nursing hat and uses it instead of a blanket. She felt it was more discreet while she nursed (it didn't scream "I'm currently nursing"), kept her baby and breast well hidden, and it was a very stylish way to nurse. It sort of looked like a baby sunhat but with a much wider brim. It was so cute and made me wish I had a baby to nurse!

I had a hooter hider and I would go longer. By the time my baby got under there I was often showing my belly. Also, one feature that I loved was that one of the bottom corners had a nice thick burp cloth sewn in. It was nice to stop feeding and just have the burp rag right there, no searching for another piece of fabric. I'd ask your mom to add that in for you.

I have a Balboa and love it. The top near my neck has some sort of wiring or something in it that keeps it opened up just enough so i can look down to see baby while nursing.

Hi!
What a nice mom you have! I have the Hooter Hider and I used it everyday and it was great but we are expecting baby #2 very soon and I decided to go with a nursing shawl this time instead. The pros with the Hooter Hider were the lightweight but durable fabric and the boning in the top which held the fabric out slightly so you could look down to help get a good latch or check and see how they're doing in there. You may want to ask Mom for the boning in whatever size or style you decide. The con was it just covered the front so if not wearing a nursing top or shirt that could be pulled down your sides and back were exposed(later figured out I could wear a tank top with built in bra--just pull up shirt, but not tank, and down bra part and you're covered). If you're looking for lightweight something lightweight and don't mind some skin peeking out something like the Hooter Hider's great and if you'd rather 360 coverage a shawl might be a better fit.
Good luck and take care!

I am not sure how big mine is, but I think you should have her make it bigger and cape-like. You want to have enough room for your growing baby.
Sometimes the material moves arond with a wiggling baby, so you probably want to make sure you stay covered! Congrats on your second!

So, my middle kid is an addicted for those blankets you can make with the knots.

We have about 35 of them. When I found out I was pregnant with my third I knew I would need more. So, we went and bought a ton of fleece fabric.

We had about a four ft by three ft piece left over, after every thing was said and tied. I took that awkward piece and just tied it off folded over on itself. It made sort of a sling design. It wrapped around him and I perfectly. and I didnt have to worry about my shirt coming up on the side or anything because It was covered by the sling.

It is now his lovey. He calls it his ''B''. So, I am thankful that I had that little 4 x 3 piece:) Made my littlest pretty darn happy too:)

Just measure yourself. (width/length of your torso).
Then based on that, make it that size.
You want it to cover you/baby/your front as you nurse.
So that, you aren't exhibiting anything to onlookers that you don't want shown.
