Graduated from accredited 2 yrs college. took the boards twice unsucessful. I exceeded the time limit now and the board want me to take the program over what do i do now?
My neighbors are nurses in Chicago area. They have coached their kids to go first for the CNA certification...then work to upgrade to RN. With any program that you take, ask what the licensing success rate is before paying money for the program.
Is there a reason that you exceeded the time limit? Hospitalization, illness, etc.? Someone dying in your family? I realize most schools don't care nor testing centers and... Not sure, but perhaps you can appeal to them. The program might give you some advice, also. And perhaps you are like me simply a poor tester. You and I need some help in that area. The program center might also have another idea. I am sure you paid lots of money to them. They should.
Do they want you to do the whole program again, or just the Caplin or whatever it is that you do at the end of the program to prepare you for the test? I took boards 8yrs ago, so I don't really remember, plus they've changed how the test is now anyways. I don't have any answers for you, sorry - but I do wish you the best of luck! Boards are tough and having to re-do the program would suck, just do what's best for you :)
Try contacting someone at the board directly to discuss your situation. I am a PT. We moved from MA. I had difficulty with the timed aspect of the boards and didn't pass until my third attempt. After practicing for 7 years in MA we moved here and the rule in IL was you had to pass the boards in two attempts. They wanted me to do a clinical rotation in a hospital before awarding me my license(mind you I had been practicing outpatient pediatrics for 7 years at that point). I ended up asking for my case to be reviewed and providing letters of recommendation and did not have to take the clinical as the board gave me an excemption and awarded me my license. It can't hurt to try.
Are you a challenged test taker. If you have a history of passing every aspect of a class but doing poorly on tests, then I would say appeal and ask for an exception for possibly a verbal test. However if you didn't pass the test because you don't have the material down pat, your school should have some sort of policy that if you don't pass that reclassing should not cost you, of course it will cost you in time and resources while you aren't practicing, but in the long run if you don't yet have the skills and need more time your patients will thank you as your patients don't get a second chance when you do their med calculations, med combining, administration and general care.
Did you take any review courses? Is there a language barrier that might in any way keep you from understanding some of the questions? Don't give up! You worked hard for this degree.
I suspect that you'll have to take the program over unless you can challenge each class and take the test and pass. I know that you can do this at a state college, tho there may be rules about how many classes you can challenge.
