Hi everyone. I am curious to know how many times most of you are still nursing and/or giving your infant a bottle. My baby boy is nine months/three weeks old and I am still breastfeeding him, as well as feeding him plenty of solid foods. I work three days a week so I pump and send breastmilk to daycare. He is nursing and/or taking a bottle four times a day (no night feedings). I am wondering if he is at the age where he'll be just fine with three "milk meals" a day. His current schedule is usually milk at 6:30 a.m.; 11 a.m.; 3:30 p.m. and again after his dinner around 7 p.m. If I do cut out one feeding, when is/what is the best way to do it? Thanks a bunch!

What can I do next?

that is probably a very good question to ask your pediatrician (sp?) but I know my girl was very small so her Dr. had her drinking formula at every meal still- at least 4-6 oz. I think that this practice is a little unusual though. I think that most babies only need the 16 oz that they are going to need when drinking cows milk (at age 1). But if you are nursing, unless you want to start weaning now, you may just want to continue as you are. Your baby will decide what he needs when he needs it- until you say "time to stop now!" if you do want to wean, then it's best to start at the times its most convenient for both of you. It's a personal thing. good luck.

To be honest you really shouldn't be cutting him back on his milk just yet or skipping a feeding unless ur feeding him some solid foods but even then I would still give him milk afterward. my baby is almost a yr old on july 7th and at 9 months he was getting milk feedings every four, maybe five hours each day.I don't think he's ready and will possibly be more cranky. When my baby was 5 months old I found this bottle called the Paci feeder on ebay...it is like a pacifier on a tube that goes to the bottle. My son loved it and so did I when I needed to do other things and he didnt have to wait for a meal.

Hi, L.,

I agree with everyone so far. When my child was nine months, he followed almost the same feeding schedule as your baby. His last feeding was right before bed time, which was around 7:30. When we finished weaning at 14 months, the last feeding to completely go was the nighttime feeding. He was nursing for only a brief amount of time, then, so I think it was more of a comfort/routine thing. Now, he drinks milk at every meal and whenever he asks for it or for water (Caleb is 15 months).

If you really want to cut out a feeding, I agree that you should ask your doctor, but it sounds like your baby is doing well, now! I, personally, wouldn't mess with his schedule. Good luck!

I am no expert, but I can tell you what I did with my daughter. She is actually one today, and still gets four to five milk bottles a day. She eats plenty of table food, and I think that is the key. I don't think I would worry about her milk consumption until he is one and needs to learn how to fill up on primary table foods. I have come to learn that all baies are different, and whatever works for you, go with it. Good Luck!

Hi L.,
You know, lol, I really don't know how often. I still nurse my son, and he's 14 months. He never took a bottle or pacifer, though he does take a sippy cup and eat solid food. I was starting to ween him off the ninny, but when we started making progress, he started teething real bad, and wouldn't eat, or drink anything but the ninny. So I'm back at square one. So whatever advice you get will be advice for me too... lol

If he's teething he's going to want more nursing probably - it will continue to go up and down for as long as you nurse him. Maybe cut out the 11am if you need to, but I think that sounds like very little nursing already. : )

Hey L.,

My little boy just turned one. We were giving him 5 bottles a day along with solid food. Morning and night bottles were 7-8oz and daytime bottles were 4-6oz. babycenter has really good info on feeding suggestions. Your baby will tell you if he is hungry or not. I know my son has an appetite LOL. We recently just started doing just sippy cups of milk and only a nighttime formula bottle and he seems ok with it. Trust your instincts and as long he is getting the required amount of ounces I think atleast 20oz he will be fine.
