Not Wanting the Bottle - Aurora,IL

Hi Moms -

My almost 9 month old doesn't seem to want to take her bottle anymore. She only has about 3 bottles a day. One between breakfast and lunch, one between lunch and dinner and then one after dinner. She doesn't have a problem with eating her food though, just the bottle. Now she is just getting over a pretty bad cold and just finished breaking in another tooth. So I was wondering if that might have something to do with it or maybe acid reflux???? She goes in for her 9 month check up next week, but I just wanted to see if any other moms have experienced this.

Thank you so much for your help. This website has been very helpful.
Have a good weekend!

J.

So What Happened?

I want to thank the 4 moms that responded. I think it was a mixture of teething and the cold. She is back to taking her bottle regularly.
Thanks Again!

Hi J.-

My daughter is also 9 months and she also has shown signs of not wanting the bottle as much. I think it does have to do with teething. She only has 4 bottles a day and one is just a "comfort" one I think to fall asleep before her nap. Once her gums start to feel a little better I'm sure she will want the bottle again.

We shifted to sippy cups around 9 months. Our situation was a bit different in that our son had minimal exposure to bottles being breastfed until 9 months. When we did start to make the switch, he really didn't take to bottles as well so we gave him Nuby sippy cups (they have a soft mouthpiece which is more similar to a nipple). She may react well to the novelty of the whole thing plus you'll be ahead of the game as doc's recommend you take bottles out of circulation by 1. Good luck!

Hi J.- My 2nd daughter nursed but at 9 mo I went back to work and she only took a sippy f breastmilk during the day. She did still nurse at night. Maybe if you try a sippy of formula with meals she might drink some and then want the bottle in the am and pm. Might be worth a try?
Good Luck

Hi J.,

I found that when my son (now 22 months) was teething and/or sick with a stuffy nose that the last thing he wanted was his bottle (sucking seemed to aggravate both the pain from the teeth coming in, and give him a feeling of suffocation since his nose was clogged). So, I think it's pretty normal! Since she is refusing the bottle, you may want to introduce a sippy cup (try both the sippy cups and the ones with straws to see which works best for her). This could be the perfect opportunity to transition off the bottle without a big fight! Good luck!
