my doctor told me to use Karo syrup when my infant was constipated. like a tablespoon or two. It was when he was an infant so I don't know if age plays a role or not. But worth a try.
Ok, so I waited until after lunch to ask. My youngest daughter had ear tubes (again) and her tonsil out on Wednesday, they gave her narcotics while we were in the hospital. She has been constipated ever since to the point where if I'm carrying her I can't touch her butt. We have tried Miralax, and baby suppositories. Nothing yet. Any advice??
So, after talking to her Dr. and reading all your guy's advice. I think we gave the poor kid every possible treatment possible. It worked, lovely. Thanks again!

I have known a child in my 14 years of being a Nanny...that had a very uncomfortable bowl movement from being constipated, then would not allow himself to have one because he knew it would hurt. he "held it", as he put it. It made him SICK...actually physically sick. He ended up in dr's office "impacted" and they had to actually get it out manually. Try ALL the things..all the juices..especially prune. Try everything before you start putting things in her bottom. They are old enough to make the connection that they HATE you putting things there,,and then they make the conncetion that anything in or OUT of there is bad and they hold it. If it is a natural stimulant (prune juice) for example that makes them go, and its soft and does not hurt, then it will cross out all the bad stuff in her sweet, little mind. Good Luck. Your little one is in my prayers, as I have had the trouble myself after having both of my kids and I know how it can hurt...especially to a baby who does not completly understand it all. Bless her sweet little heart.
Um... My daughter has had problems with constipation off and on, and I have had to give her suppositories, and every nurse and dr I have ever talked to has told me if the suppositories do not produce a bowel movement within 2 hrs, she needs to be taken to a dr or the er. If suppositories don't work, she may have a blockage. And if a blockage isn't taken care of, it can lead to intestinal scarring and permanent digestive issues. I don't mean to scare you, but at least call her dr and find out what he/she thinks.
my daughter had the same EXACT problem, and nothing worked, i mean NOTHING! the meds where a joke and juice was not fast enough. i finally talked to the doc again and they told me to stimulate her with a thermometer. just act like you would if you where taking her temp rectal. maddie would go almost instantly, or soon after! you should ask the doc, or nurse if this would work for you! it did me. i know it doesnt sound pleasant, but i know how desperate you are.good luck.
Prunes... Does the trick every time. If she won't eat them, try stage 2 baby food. They make prunes and apples (the prunes don't taste so strong).
Good luck.
I feel so sorry for her!! Poor thing. The only suggestion I have, is what our Ped told us to do for our baby. Use a rectal thermometer to help stimulate it. It may not work, but if she will tolerate it, it's worth a try.
Good luck!
Not sure which brand of baby supposiory u used; but try Fleet BabyLax - they're liquid, premelted. 1 of those always did the trick w/ my little guy, and our pediatric gastro-intestinal specialist recommended them. Sometimes you have to ask the pharmasist to help u locate them!
prunes or prune juice, and my German friend swears by olive oil around the 'exit point'
Pear juice or apple juice, seems to work well. My smaller twin had constipation issues and this always worked. Good luck!
In order to get things started, I gave my daugher some chocolate ex-lax. I know that it isn't recommended for children, but I gave her half of a young adult dose(half of one piece). We also started giving her apple juice everyday. Also, have you tried giving her a meal that will make her have a bowel movement? For some this is pizza, salad, or even hot soup. Also, consider her eating habits the past few days. Usually, if you don't eat a lot, you will not have as many bowel movements. Has she eat a lot of dairy products, such as ice cream? That could constipate her.
If you take her to the emergency room, they will either tell you to increase her fiber intake, give her a suppository, or give her an enema.
I hope things work out. No pun intended.
My 11 month old gets constipated easily. We mix prune baby food with oatmeal and it gets her going. I know she's a little old for baby food - but if you can get her to eat it, it may do the trick. Or maybe prune puice.
Good luck!
