I have an 11 month old son who has NEVER slept though the night. He DEMANDS to be fed when he gets up which ranges from every 3 to 5 hours. I have tried to talk to the dr about this but all she told me was to increase his solid food and not to let him cry for more than 10 min. I have tried everything I can think of...we tried letting him cry it out but he would cry for hours if we let him, we tried decreasing the amount of formula in his night time bottles, we have tried adding cereal to his bottles, taboo I know but we are at our whits end, I have given him teething tablets. Nothing seems to help and he is so inconsistent with his habits at night. During the day he has a regular nap of about 2 hours in the afternoon ant that's it. he seems to be pretty happy otherwise. He is already over 25 lbs, I have incresased his solid food to 2 jars at each meal and 6 oz of formula. I don't know what to do....My Daughter was so easy, she weaned herself and slept through the night by 2 months. I really need aome sleep....any advice at this point would be very welcome!!!!
Thanks!!!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice. Unfortunately nothing has really changed. He is eating everything he can get his hands on. He is also down to 4 bottles a day and none at night. He has a VERY unpredictable night sleep schedule. He will go a couple days where he will sleep from 8pm to 5am (I can deal with that) and then go 2-4 days where he will be up from 3 to 7 hours during the night. He wakes up crying and there is nothing that I can do to calm him. I have tried every soothing technique that I can think of. Any help would again be welcome!
Thanks!

Have you tried giving him something other than from a jar? Something that he could easily gum and would not choke on...maybe the jar foods arent doing it for him.

Hi M. ! I don't think my kids starting sleeping throught the night till they were like 2 1/2 or older ! I know this doesn't help ! I was up getting sippi cups of water of I took the bottle or stopped nursing ! Heck they would get up a get there cups of morning milk out of the fridge and go back to bed or end up in mine so time during the night ! My 5 year old still gets up and wants a drink and ends up in my bed ! Sometimes I wake up to a 5 year ols a 9 year ols and my 11 year old but I'm not complaining at least they didn't wake me up ! I don't think your doing anything wrong I thing each child is different and requires a different amount of your time maybe this is the time he has chose !

I would maybe try letting him have 'real' food. Thats what did it for my son. By 8 months old and four teeth he wold eat whatever we were having. In about a week it made a DRAMTIC differnece in his sleep habits. I mean if you think that he may be ready I would give it a try. Both my kids by nine months would have nothing to do with jar food. The 'real' food keeps them fuller longer because it stays with them. I hope this helps and good luck!

Hey M., I have an 8 month old daughter and she used to wake up alot through the night hungry but we also noticed she had a lot of gas, which could have been mistaken for hunger pains. We started adding some Mylicon to each bottle everynight and it really seemed to help her. She sleeps great at night now. Don't know if this will help at all but thought I would let you know.

Have you tried any earths best organic foods/formulas?
they are low in sugar-One time not to long ago we ran out of earths best red can formula and tried a different organic formula (similac) and the baby (8 months) was EXTREMELY rambunctous and difficult to be put to sleep and stay asleep-We attributed it to the second ingredient in the new formula --SUGAR!! (organic cane sugar but sugar nonetheless!-a new flavor for our baby and obviously it was an issue in her system)
best

sorry M., but Brandi's right, most kids don't sleep through the night until they are about 2. They have too much going on between teeth and developing. Yours is probably close to walking which is not going to help the sleeping. Keep consistant night time rituals, and be there when your son needs you. Also, take naps when he does. My son just turned two and is just now sleeping through the night, which is great. Too bad I'm seven months pregnant and have to get up 5 times a night now to pee! My mom says sleeping all night doesn't happen again until the kids move out :-)

Ready Baby Wise. Sorry to say but I was going to say add rice to the bottle but you have already tried that. Tough love...go in there and tell him to lay down and go to bed. If you stop giving into him - he will get the picture. Be firm. Otherwise drug him...Tylenol PM, cough syrup, etc. to get him to sleep longer. Also make sure he is getting his naps during the day. A well rested baby sleeps at night.

I have 2 kiddos a boy and a girl, and they are polar opposites in everything from conception on. My daughter didn't sleep all night till she was 3 yrs old, my son at a year ( the normal time). first of all RELAX the more you stress about it the worse it seems . there's a book called " The no cry sleep solution" by Elizabeth Pantley its a great book. pick it up its written by a mom of 5 or 6 kids and it has many different tools for getting kids to sleep. Check it out, read it and realize that your son isn't all that odd , a year is a pretty normal time for finally sleeping all night , your daughter was pretty unusual for a baby sleeping that early. Try not to compare them.
