Hi mamas! My 2yr old had a T&A 2 weeks ago Friday and has not slept since he had his surgery, I know he did not sleep the first week because of pain but is it normal for him to wake several times a night crying. It usually starts about an hour or two after he goes to bed and he usually will wake up every hour maybe two I end up in bed with him so my husband can get some sleep and he is still waking up crying when I am in bed with him. Has anyone ever gone through this after surgery, if so how long can we expect this to go on? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Yes it is very normal. It happened to our son who was 2 at the time. He and I were both getting so exhausted that we had to do something. So, we decided to let him sleep in our bed (totally not something that we are prone to doing - not that it is bad, just not our thing). It helped tremendously...he would still wake up, but would fall right back to sleep once he realized we were there. I don't know if that is something you want to or can do with your situation (everyones different), but it may help. My son needed the extra soothing and after a week and a half he went back to his bed with very little problems. Good luck! :)

My grandson (4) just had the same surgery in January. It took around 3 weeks to get him to sleep through the night. He'd wake up in a panic, screaming. Like another poster, my daughter had him sleep with her in her bed. She had a 3 month old who was waking up twice in the night to nurse, and this one who was waking up at times, every hour, but he'd skip one every once in a while. She was exhausted! But it finally passed, he went back to his own bed, and all's well! So, just be patient. It gets better.

This happened to my daughter, she was three when she had hers. It happened for 2 or 3 weeks after. I think I remember the doctor saying something about her throat getting really dry because she was still breathing like she had big tonsils.
Good luck.

my 2 year old and my 4 year old did the same thing. I made a little bed on the floor in our room for them to sleep. I can't sleep if they're in the same bed as me. I had a cool humidifier running in the room and kept a cup of water close by. Give it a few more weeks and he should be back to normal.

Hi M.,
I'm so sorry to hear you're having such a tough time. I wonder if your son has allergies. Many people who do have allergies have trouble sleeping, but the right air purifier can make an amazing difference. My neice's 4 yr. old son was waking in pain, and the doctor proposed surgery, but when they tried one of my air purifiers, the problem was solved. Please see www.freshairliving.com/nolawood password is guest to learn more, or just call or email me, & I'll be happy to let you test one for a few days, to see whether it makes a difference. Blessings, N. ###-###-#### ____@____.com

I hate to say this but I just don't think this is normal. My son had a T & A when he was 3 and was fine after the first week. I too did sleep with him but that was as a soothing measure and to better monitor when he needed the pain meds.
I would recommend contacting your ENT ASAP and getting him in to be evaluated. Perhaps there was a complication??? I don't mean to sound crass and I have a pleathora of ways to get my kids to go to sleep but this sounds like there is more to his not wanting to go to sleep. Perhaps the fear that another surgery is going to happen to him when he goes to sleep? Maybe he has bleeding? Have the scabs fallen off? Is it irritated? Have you tried giving him some more pain meds to see if that alleviates the problem? Talk to him about what his fears are...he may tell you more than you think he will.
If all hope is abandoned and you are positively absolutely desperate for sleep, find the liquid Tylenol PM and dose him based on his regular dosage for Tylenol. It will at least buy you 6-8 hours of sleep. Certainly not a long term effect and doesn't work if you use it for more than a couple nights at a time (they build up a bit of a resistance) but in a desperate pinch...nice to have on hand. Best of luck and please call the Dr.!

You may want to try putting a cold air humidifier in his room to help keep his throat from drying out so much. Also, let him keep a sippy cup of icy water in his bed if wakes up hurting. Hopefully this will help.
