I need advice on how to get my 18 month daughter Erin to sleep through the night. I put her to bed the same time every night but it never fails that around 1 am she is screaming her head off and again around 4 am. My husband and I work full time. She goes to a home day care and the sitter lays her down at around the same time every day. She sleeps for about 2 hrs. On the weekend I try to keep the sitters routine.

What can I do next?

J.,
I am responding because I am going through the VERY same thing. Mine is 17 months old, she will sleep all night if she is in our bed, but if she is in her own bed....she is up around 1 or 2 am. I am at a loss for what to do...There is no such thing as crying it out for this child...she will cry so hard it makes her sick and she will throw up. She only takes an hour nap after lunch...so I know she is sleepy at bedtime and very capable of sleeping through the night. Both my husband and I work full time..so when she wakes up at 1..we go get her and put her in bed with us ( for our own sanity). Good Luck!!! Let me know if you find anything that works for you and I will do the same!!!

What is her bedtime and do you have a bedtime routine with her? I always made sure my daughter went through the same settling routine and always put her to bed the same way. Occassionally she would wake at night, usually during milestones or sickness, but a few times for seemingly no reason. I was advised to go in, lay her down, cover her, and tell her goodnight...don't bring her to my bed. It worked!

Is she wet when you check her at 1? When you go in do you give her a bottle? That may be the reason she is up at 4, her diaper is wet and uncomfortable. If you make sure she doesn't have anything to drink about 2 hours before bed, she should have a dry diaper all night. Does she have a nap late afternoon? This might affect her sleep cycle. Her body may think the time from bed time til 1 is a nap. Either way. As long as her diaper is dry, Let her cry through it. It will take about a week for her to realize that crying will not bring the response she wants. I know it will be hard to deal with, you think you need to stop the crying so everyone (but you) can sleep, but in the long run it's better for everyone. My 2 yr old used to have about the same routine. Bed at 8 up and crying about 1 then again at about 5. But I finally learned to ignore it. and now she's done after about 5 minutes and then back to sleep. You know your baby, and you know the difference between crying because something really wrong, like pain, discomfort, and nightmares, versus crying for attention.
