Not Happy W/ Switching to a Toddler Bed

So we thought it was time for our little girl, who is 21 months, to be switched from her crib to a toddler bed. We spend alot of our weekends at our friends house and she sleeps in a playpen...well she's been climbing out of it! So we were afraid she would do the same SOON in her crib. We just put up the bed yesterday and she cried at naptime when I put her in the bed and then fell asleep on the floor. Last night she screamed for a few minutes and again crashed on the floor. We put her in her bed (at naptime and last night) but this morning she was back on the floor (don't know if she fell out or woke up).

Is this normal?? Should we revert back to the crib? I don't want bed time to be a nightmare all the time. I know others have posted questions similar to this but I couldn't find any and I'm in a hurry!

What can I do next?

Don't give up! The first night with a toddler bed we ended up putting my daughter in her play pen because the crib was already down and she wouldn't stay in her room. Next night I finally got her to stay after several trips back and forth. Third night it only took a couple tries and by the fourth night she was used to it and did great. It just takes them time to get use to it. I know it is frustrating because you just want them to be happy and content but give it time. She'll figure it out

If she's having trouble with the bed, what about just trying to put the matress on the floor and letting her get used to that then putting in the toddler bed after she is used to sleeping on the matress?

Hi M.. If your daughter isn't crying for more than a few minutes I would stick with the toddler bed. Consistency is key. As far as her falling asleep on the floor, perfectly normal. This is a big transition for your daughter so make sure to praise her for being such a big girl. If she enjoys you reading to her I'd recommend getting some books on the subject...we got my son "My Big Boy Bed" and he loved it. Good luck!

Have you tried to tell her that its broken, and take it out of the house. Thats what we did with our son. And he had no problems with that. Good luck!!

M.,
This is what we did with our daughter when we decided to put her in a toddler bed. We set her toddler bed up...with out the mattress and left it in her room for 2 weeks. She took an interest in it by then. So after 2 weeks we put a mattress in it and let her get used to it that way. After about a week she started wanting to sleep in her big girl bed. You have to build them up for something like that. Make then want to sleep in it. So before a month was up our daughter was sleeping in her big girl bed. She is now in a twin bed and loves it just as much. Good luck to you!

I would not switch back. This is normal behavior. In fact if she is staying in her room and not coming into yours she is doing good.We had to put a gate up in my daughters room and she would scream at the gate and eventually started climbing over and coming to our room.My Son did more like what your Daughter is doing.Just make sure you did tell her that the baby bed is all gone and she is a big girl now so she can understand why you took her bed and doesn't feel punished.Just continue to put her back in the bed and she will adjust.Good Luck!

My son used to fall asleep on the floor as well. Just stick to the toddler bed, she will get used to it. It took my son a few days to a week maybe. Goodluck!
