Nose Picking and Nail Biting

Back in April, my youngest son, then just over 2, broke his leg. He spent 2 weeks in the hospital and 6 weeks in a body cast. Well, he got into the habit of picking his nose and biting his nails from being well, bored. Jump forward to now. I have not cut his finger nails (no, he didn't bite his toe nails! :) ) since April. And, he must think his finger belongs in his nose. Sometimes when I tell him to get his finger out of his nose, or quit picking it, he says "I'm noooot!" and quickly pulls it out, only to stick his finger back up. Now, most of the time there are no boogs up there at all. He gets one once in a great while, sometimes eats them (ew) or sometimes puts them in the garbage. I don't know what to do to keep his finger out of his nose and his hand/nails out of his mouth. Any advice would be great!

p.s. he isn't stressed when he picks or bites, just casual.

What can I do next?

I will be reading the advices here since I am dealing with it also, but last year it was my son would be constansly adjusting himself(his private) and I actually had people asking if he likes playing with himself. LOL Anyways what my son's problem was he had this issue of he did not like his private sticking or touching anything so he was always adjusting it to stay up front. This eventually just became a habit after awhile of doing it so much that at times he did not even realize he was doing it. Well that stopped after first grade and now this year it is his nose. I hope he grows out of it soon, cause it seems like he doesn't even care if people see him doing these things. I wish you the best of luck with this also.

Hi S., I had three sugar and spice girls, then I had 2 boys...they can be amused by any bodily function that would make a girl scream! My 2 & 4 year old seem to love to do things that I tell them not too. Maybe if you downplay it and use distraction, he'll get over his boogie fixation! Good luck and if it works, let me know. My boys love anything gross like that, too. I'm glad I'm not the only one dealing with things like that. I guess it's normal!

He's doing it absentmindedly and probably doesn't even realize it half the time. I made my son wash his hands every time I caught him picking and eventually he got sick of it and stopped. He still does it once in a while though. Good Luck!

Hum, why was he in a full bodycast? My 2 y o broke his leg and was just in a walking cast for 3 weeks.

About the nose thing i remember when my boys that age had strange habits that were repetitive. I would honestly start him on another "unconscious habit" that is not so offensive.

At the store in the section with the nail polish is a clear nail polish that is called NO BITE. Let me tell you it tastes horrendous. And when gotten near your nose it smells too...
Since your guy is little still he probibly won't have a problem with you "doing his nails" It doesn't have to be pretty. Just a swipe over each nail.
If that doesn't stop it, it will at least slow it down...

I don't have this problem nor do I have a boy (although I would love one) but maybe explain to him that he could get a really bad infection in his nose from the germs on his fingers. Just a thought....Good luck.

My DD started this at about this age. I am still struggling with it. It's disgusting. I try to remind myself that she will outgrow it. The more I correct this behavior, the worse it gets. Make a big deal out of it when you notice that they aren't doing it. Start a reward chart and put a star when they are not doing it. I will be anxiously awaiting other input to see what works for others, maybe I will take my own advice and start a chart.

You are going to think this is crazy but when my daughter was that age she used to pick her nose. Well....one day I told her that boogers were actually dead flies and bugs that flew up her nose and died. She got so grossed out by the thought of it that she never picked again.

As far as the nail biting, I have heard that it's a phase. My 3 year old son has been biting his nails for a number of months now. He is hyper, so I think this is part of it. I have been told that most kids outgrow this habit. I am sure to keep his hands very clean with antibacterial soaps, etc.
I wish you luck!! :)
