Nose Picking - Longmont,CO

My 9 year old has a terrible habit of picking her nose and eating it. It has become such a problem that her teacher has brought it up to her and to me. I try to distract her when she is in that act and offer a tissue. I arm her with tissues in the car, backpack and in our home. Yesterday I spoke with her about it and she told me that it is such a habit that she doesn't even realize that she is doing it. I know it is embarassing for me when she does it especially if we are somewhere and I see her doing it in public and cannot get her attention to remind her to stop. The other children at school have to notice it as well. Please advise me.

Thank you and God Bless

I've seen and heard folks having rapid success changing entrenched habits using a harmless non-invasive intervention called EFT. You tap gently on a few acupunture meridians, and it quickly clears the pattern from the nervous system. It sounds sort of fringe, but even doctors and psychotherapists are teaching and using the technique with good results. Sometimes it only takes a few minutes of tapping to release the habit completely.

You can download the instructional manual for free at www.emofree.com.

Or you can learn it very quickly from Rebecca Marina's tutorial on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/swf/l.swf?swf=http%3A//s.ytimg.com...

Might be fun to teach it to your daughter, and invite her to tap on a few points whenever she catches herself picking. Most kids love tapping, because it feels more powerful and fun than trying to use will power ...

Good luck!

Hi, Jeana. It's true that habits become unconscious acts sometimes. There's a process to stopping them, where you move from unconscious acting (I'm picking my nose and don't know it) to conscious resistance (stop picking my nose, stop picking my nose) to unconsicous non-acting (I'm not picking my nose and I don't have to remind myself not to do it). To get through the process, you have to begin by being aware of the activity you are doing every time you are doing it; so, point out to your daughter every time you see her picking her nose, and tell her to stop every time (or try putting something on the end of her finger that will alert her to it on her own--what's that stuff they put on the ends of fingers to stop sucking thumbs/biting nails?). Then, she will become aware of it and will start reminding herself to stop doing it. Pretty soon, then, she won't have to think about it and she'll just stop.
You might also try videotaping her for awhile and catching her doing it on tape. Then when she sees it, she'll probably be grossed out by it. Tell her it can make her sick. Or, take her to the doctor for it? that costs money, though.
Good luck! Happy holidays!
S.

I can imagine how you are feeling. But I heard that kids that pick their nose, might have a mineral deficiency. I know that sounds ichy, but I would check into with your doctor.

Otherwise, give her something special, if she doesn't pick her nose for a whole week. Maybe, that might help.

Wish you all the best.

Does she always pick and then "eat"? I haven't dealt with this yet, but I was wondering if you put some Mavala Stop (nasty "polish" that worked wonders for stopping our 7 yr old from sucking his thumb!) on her picking fingernails, when she placed her finger in her mouth to eat, it would definitely deter her from doing so... and maybe help her realize when she's doing it. It wouldn't necessarily stop her from the picking part, but maybe it would help her be conscious of it? We ordered our bottle from www.amazon.com for $8. Might be worth a try?

I hope you find a solution! Habits are hard to break.
