My 5 year old is forever picking his nose, sometimes he eats it, I have explained this spreads germs, can make him sick, told him people will not want to play with him and will make fun of him, made him wash his hands spanked, but nothing works, how can I get this to stop? Is this normal? Will he outgrow it?

You might tell him that it is "sociably unacceptable" and
if he must relieve a symptom, do it in private. I think
he will be more conscious and will break a habit.
You might give him a "little nudge" toward the bathroom
to let him "be aware" that you see it, and so do others.
It will put him in front of a mirror so that he is aware
also of what others see.

Peer pressure. My youngest did the same thing and her brother and sister and I would all scream and cringe and constantly hand her Kleenexes....none of it stopped her. But - lo and behold!- off she went to school where someone "important" must have told her how gross it was. Or she heard someone else get teased for doing the same thing. Something happened and she stopped by the end of Kindergarten. Good luck.

training correct behaviors equals consistancy. i would constantly tell him " get you finger out of your nose". if he dosent get it out right away then pull it out yourself and say in a firm voice the above over and over. make sure he knows its not a game.

Hi L.,
it could just be a habit for him- but there use to be an "old wives tale" about that. some would say that when that happens all the time it could be a sign of "pin worms". most all children get them and they are easy to eliminate- just have your dr. check him for that and he will let you know what to do. Pin worms are very common in little children
good luck and blessings

Yes, it is normal, but first I'ed check him for pinworms as they make the nose itch. Does he also pick at his bottom. Lay him down and spread his rectum to see if there are any pinworms. If so, there's meds. across the counter for that. If not, just keep trying to get him to stop. GOOD LUCK

He will when his friends tell him he is gross. Can you capture video of him doing this when he is not aware.. Maybe while he is watching tv? Also keep tissue around the house and in the car, hand him one EVERY time you see him with a finger up there..

My daughter volunteers at a summer camp at an elementary school every summer. A few years ago she threw away a whole pack of playing cards, cause a child picked his nose and stuck the booger on one of her cards.. She was so disgusted she just could not deal.. (hee, hee) I asked her if she said anything to him? She said she waited till they were alone and told him she had thrown away her cards because she had seen what he had done. She told him it was a "really nasty habit". Then she left it at that. He was embarrassed but she did not see him do it again, at least in front of her.

make his nose unpickable by keeping it hydrated and itch free. Use saline nose spray and have him blow in the morning and evening.
