I would start using humidifiers in their bedrooms, as well as in the rest of the house. Some homes have whole-house humidifiers integrated into the HVAC system, but you might need a stand-alone one.
My son seems to be getting these a lot this Summer. My daughter has had a couple too. What is the best thing I can do for frequent nose bleeds or to prevent my kids having them altogether?

Smear Vaseline inside the nostril. Not a ton, just enough to protect from the heat and dryness.
My 6 yr old son will have to have a surgery its usually said to be a heredity thing my Dad had them as well. But what does help it nasal saline twice a day to keep them moist. He has them daily and they last awhile. Also my 11mo old has started to get . And that's all the specialist told us to do until they can fix it.
If keeping the passages moist doesn't help then you may have to have the vessels in the nose cauterized. I had to have that happen when I was a child. I was having nose bleeds nearly every day. Vaseline didn't help. the doctor said that the vessels were too close to the surface and he cauterized them. No more nose bleeds.
My son has frequent nose bleeds, unless I use the Q tip, vaseline method as described by DOP. I read that the cauterization is only a temporary fix. I would never put my son through that when a Q tip and vaseline work work well.
Similar to what some others have said, I had very frequent nosebleeds add a child, and Vaseline on a Q-Tip helped the most. I wouldn't try cauterization unless it got really bad and Vaseline wasn't helping; I did that once and it didn't make any difference for my nose at all. Saline drops/spray might help too, anything to keep the inside moist.
Are you in a dry place? My daughter used to get them, at bed time. It was mostly in the winter when the heat was going. I think she just got really dry. We started using a cool mist humidifier and it worked wonders. Unless of course she just outgrew them!
Not to sound mean, but is he picking it? Does he scratch it with a fingernail. I just looked and saw you are in UT, are the fires/smoke affecting him?
Ayr Saline Gel (or any other brand) on a Q-Tip gently applied all over the interior of the nose. The humidifier will help, but since most likely your home is not the only air conditioned place your kids will be in, that alone might not do the trick.
I am prone to nose bleeds, even more so since I am pregnant, and as long as I remember to use teh gel I have no problems.
If the problem contiunes after adequate musiturization etc, talk to your kids ped. About 10 years ago I had to have a capillary cautrized becuase it was bleeding every day. The procedure took about 5 minutes, right in the doctors office.
Good luck!
