Nose Bleeds

Bloody noses can also be caused by dehydration. Make sure he is drinking enough water through the day and no soda because it will make the dehydration worse if that is what it is.

I don't know how to prevent them, but I do know that if you apply pressure on the nose where the bone ends, but you're not closing the nose. I just learned this is a First Aid class and it stopped my 30 minute nose bleed in minutes once I remembered to do that.

I used to get frequent nosebleeds when I was young too. My best friend's daughter had this problem and I suggested she use a humidifier in her daughter's room. Once she increased the humidity with a cool mist humidifier (daughter is always warm while sleeping) the nose bleeds stopped. Might give it a try.

Line her nose with a little aquaphor before bed and in the morning- it helps lubricate the tissues and doesn't smell so it won't irritate her nose further.

I used to get nosebleeds that would seem to last forever, but now if it happens, they last just a minute or so. Just wet a tissue with lemon juice and put the tissue up your nose for a minute. It might sound weird but it really, truly works! Also make sure the air in your home isn't too dry. Since it's almost daily, you might want a doctor to check things out to make sure it's nothing more serious, like what happened to Catherine C.

My son has had his nose cauterized twice to minimize nose bleeds. In his case, it was done by the Ear Nose and Throat doctor when he was under sedation (i.e. to get tubes in his ears).

It might help the doctor if you knew if it was one nostril in particular that had the bloody noses. I keep track of them them on the calendar.

The doctor did recommend putting bacitracin in the nostril after a bloody nose. (when its dried up) That seems to eliminate recurring bloody noses. (If he gets one, he would be likely to have another one in the next few days)

I second the humidifier at night. The air in here is very dry and then add to that air conditioning and it can irritate sensitive little noses. I suffered from frequent nose bleeds as a child and it can be traumatic, so you want to try to prevent them if at all possible. The good news is that most kids outgrow them eventually, but it is hard to handle being the kid who always has a bloody nose. I used to wake up with a blood soaked pillow since mine would often start in the middle of the night. My mom also put vaseline on the inside of my nostrils which seemed to help. You may even want to try a saline nose spray to see if that helps at all. When I had ones that wouldn't stop my parents would put frozen peas across my face and that always seemed to slow it down. Also, as you probably know, make sure he tips his head forward and not back, as swallowing a lot of blood can cause vomiting.
