Hi lovely ladies! My 5 month old son was babbling and cooing around 3 months. I noticed yesterday that he hasn't done this in a while. He laughs and interacts well, and is very observant. His hearing seems fine and there are no indicators of ear infections. Anyway, just wondering if it's normal for them to take a time out from babbling. Thanks!

Sometimes babies will cease using one skill (verbal/babbling) when they are starting to learn another skill (is he learning to sit up on his own or some other motor skill?). My son didn't really use much in the way of verbal skills and only has 3 words right now at a year old because he walked at 9 months, so he spent a lot of time perfecting that skill and not much effort on the verbal stuff. His pedi said that is normal, so I wouldn't worry. He is probably just moving on to something else for the time being. Once my son got really good on his feet (he's running now), he started making sounds again. He was pretty stealth before that because he would walk around, but you wouldn't hear a peep out of him! :-)

Hi A M,

You are wise to be concerned about your child's lapse in cooing and babbling, although you didn't say for how long. I am a retired occupational therapist. I would tell your pediatrician, get a good recommendation for an evaluation by a pediatric speech and language pathologist, AND call the Special Education Dept. of your local school district (the Infant Parent Program) and, for free, have one of their speech/language speech pathologists evaluate your child. Your infant is eligible for FREE therapy through your local school district. I would also check with your health insurance and see what it would take (like a doc referral) to get them to pay for a private Speech and Language
pathologist to evaluate your son, since, in my experience, the school therapy was never enough. Below are some developmental charts I found online:

Bless you and good luck! jenifer

Yes it is normal for htem to do this from time to time. I was concerned as a first time mom with my daughter - I even asked her PEDI-Doc. He told me to just give her time and see how long it lasts - if things hadnt changed within a reasonable amount of time he would have her tested - but it turned out she was just really intent on listening and then the next thing I new - she was imitating EVERYTHING! The listtle stinker was just reataining everything she said and saw!
Watch - you will see - and when you do - it will be simply amazing!

I wouldn't be too worried about it as long as he appears to be learning new things and progressing. You will see as they learn more the things they once did repeatedly will dwindle away. Then out of the blue, from somewhere unknown they start doing it again.

Is he making any noise? Does he mock what you do? I think at this age they are supposed to be little mocking birds. Just try making some sounds and faces and see if he does it back. I would think since he is laughing and interacting that he would be fine. If it really is bothering you I would check with his ped. at his 6 month check up.

my grandson is now 26 months old now. but when he was around 5 months he did stop cooing. and we thought he had a sore throat. but we never knew. he did start back again. but we thought his voice sounded different so maybe it was a sore throat.
