my sisters 2 month old little boy cries nonstop. he's been throwing up quite a bit but her doctor says the baby is fine don't worry. he does have a herniated belly button also. and it seems the only time he's not crying is when he's eating. any ideas?

What can I do next?

I agree about lactose intolerance. Maybe switching to soy milk may help if they have ruled out reflux.

I would ditch my pedi and find a new one! We see a wonderful gastroenterologist Dr. Ogunmola in Fort WOrth and it may be worth her while to try and see someone. That does not sound even remotely normal to me!

Not sure if your she's breastfeeding or bottle feeding? If breastfeeding, there might be something in her diet that is upsetting baby's tummy. My daugther was very colicky (and gassy) until 4 months, when we found out she has a milk and soy intolerance and had reflux...so I had to eliminate these things from my diet. Even though there little tummies hurt, sucking soothes them so they continue to want to eat. But sounds like your sister needs to find a 2nd opinion and see what's causing discomfort in her baby. There's always a reason why babies are crying. We just have to figure it out!

if he's crying non stop and he's throwing up allot...then try asking a pedi if he's lactose intollerant.

My daughter did that and we changed her to soy (my friend to a special formula) and it stopped.

DON"T medicate your baby with a reflux medicine unless it's absolutely mecessary. Too much of that will hinder babies digestion in the future.

Read about it...there's lots on the net.

Knowledge is power...and only SHE knows what's best for her baby.

Good luck.

A., I was raised in England and over there we give our children something called Gripe water. It is very effective and helps colic. You can get it from any British store or English grocery section. You can also get it online. There is a British store in Grapevine. My friends have used it and just love it. It was a life saver.

Let me know if you need any help finding it.

Is she formula feeding or breast?
If formula, tell her to try the Enfamil Gentlease.
When my son had colic and I started the Gentlease (also around 8 weeks old), and he was like a new baby!

Take Care!

I would find a new DR and find out what is really going on!

Hi A.,
This is NOT normal. Sounds like reflux. Some spit up is normal but throwing up with crying is not. I had a reflux baby and had a heck of a time getting the doctor to help me until I got a little ugly about it and demanded help. I've heard so many stories about doctors that seem reluctant to help babies that cry. My son was gaining weight so they thought he was fine but they wasn't home with him screaming all the time! Does he have a hard time nursing? Turn his head to the side or get any relief from being held upright instead of lying down? He could have a problem digesting the formula that he is on. We ended up using Parents Choice Gentle, Walmarts brand. It was easier to digest and caused less pain. We also used Zantac until he was around one year old. It was a HUGE blessing him and the whole family. I don't think that the hernia has any play in this problem. I think it's either infant reflux, GERD, formula intolerance or colic.
I sure hope you guys can get to the bottom of the problem soon. :)

My baby did this. He cried and cried and spit up A LOT. I took him to the doctor at 2 weeks of age and he was diagnosed with GERD (Acid Reflux). His PED put him on Prevacid and Zantac. You can have happy spiters (babies with acid reflux who don't seem to be in pain) or you can have the scrawny screamers ... the ones that really seem to be bothered by the reflux. My son was one of those. Have your sister get a second opinion. There is no need for a baby to have to be in pain. And crying all the time is NOT normal. Good Luck !!

I agree with the others about getting a second opinion! Sounds like bad colic or reflux.

My son did that for a while too..turns out he could not handle the iron in the formulas so we placed him on Soy formula. He did much better after that but it was expensive.

Definitely get a second opinion, a baby crying all the time is not normal!! It is their only way of expressing pain so there is something going on.

I would get a second opinion! My son had excessive gas but luckily he could pass it with no problem. My Pedi prescribed a supplement of Mylicon (?sp)Drops over the counter and peppermint oil drops in water, flat sugar free rootbeer. I know rootbeer sounded strange to me at the time but originally it was made to sooth sour stomachs. If she is nursing, she could eliminate stuff from her diet to see if a change occurs. Some babies are unable to digest lactose sugars, there is an over the counter product for babies but I'm not recalling the product name. Best of luck!
