I've always been scared to try it, so I'm curious to see what other people say.
Has anyone ever signed up with the smaller, non regulated, electric companies? Are they legit? Do they save you money? There's a year and a half contract with each, First Energy and AEP Retail Electric, but they guarantee rates that are lower than AEP, but say there are additional fees, which AEP has too, but the amount is not specified. Also, I don't understand how AEP, for example, can have it's own AEP Retail Electric utility that competes with itself for business. The lines and electric still come from AEP and you still get the same bill and pay the same way.

dont do it. you will be hit with a big cancelation fee. they are not any better and you lose out on the confidence that a bigger company can perform when there are outages and such. check with the BBB for any complaints. We had a company trying to get into MI that was driven out bc they were fraudulant and loved the low income families. they wre a bad company they left and changed their name.
We get these people going door to door every now and then. I have to say they are pushy and one guy was downright creepy and scary. I do not even want to talk to them, much less sign up for something. I have not heard much about these companies, but I am not sold on them.
The small energy companies are very popular here in Texas. There are so many choices and their rate plans are complicated and they all raise their rates eventually. My husband shops each year by making a spreadsheet to figure out which one is the best deal for how much electricity we use.
