Hey mamas,

I'm on the hunt for PVC (vinyl / #3) - free pool and beach toys. It hasn't been hard to find toys per se, but it has been almost impossible to find floatie - type things he could be in while in the water.

I'll even consider phalate-free vinyl at this point.

Thanks for your suggestions!

What can I do next?

The only thing I've ever found (and boy have I searched!) to be PVC free are pool noodles. Who would have thought!!

The brand EverEarth has PVC free inflatable toys, but I can't for the life of me find where they are sold. You could contact them and ask where to buy.

As far as the pools, the hard plastic ones are the way to go. They are definitely the lesser of the evils...and aren't usually coated with PVC and phalates.

Do a google search using "PVC-free pool liner" and a whole mess of things will pop up including links for above-ground pool liners and kiddie pools and sites that have "green" products without PVC. It's not the vinyl itself, but the PVC (chemical) in it that makes that "new plastic" smell.

"PVC-free pool floaties" gives good results for toys.

Have you looked in the baby bath toy section? I bet you'd find a ton of options there!

I would Google it!

It's mostly because the chemicals that are used to keep pools from becoming festering cesspools degrade/melt/warp/or cause harmful chemical reactions many kinds of plastic. Ditto sunlight degrades (weakens, melts, or makes extremely brittle) many kinds of plastic. Vinyl is one of the few kinds of plastic that doesn't react with chlorine or borine or degrades in sunlight... either of which... obviously creates very real health concerns.
