Non-Exempt Employee and Vacation Hours

Quick question, I work a 9 am - 5 pm workday. I am getting ready to request 1/2 vacation days to use up the remainder of my vacation days before the end of the calendar year. If I get to work at 9 am and I'm taking 4 hours vacation time, do I work 9 am - 1 pm (no lunch)? Or can I leave at noon and take my lunch and be gone for the remainder of the day? I'm a non-exempt employee, so I'm hourly. Any helpful comments are appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I checked with my co-worker. I'm to:

Work 9 am - 12:30 pm (leaving the office for "lunch")
Lunch 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
Vacation 1:30 pm - 5 pm

I can only assume you eat lunch in the office so it is a working lunch? Because you only have an eight hour shift.

Anyway in a nutshell you must work four hours and use four hours vacation so you stay till one.

I would check with your payroll department, not a coworker. I do payroll/HR you would not believe what people do on the say of coworkers and then they go on vacation and we say no, you will not be paid for this. Kind of sucks when your check is short.

You work from 9:00am-1:00pm.
No lunch. You eat your lunch after when you finish your 4 hours.
You are taking off at 1:00pm anyway.
You are obligated to do your 4 hours.
Lunch is typically NON paid for that hour.
You are also non-exempt.

You work 8 hours. That does NOT include lunch hour.
Thus, you work from 9:00am-1:00pm, and that is 4 hours... half of your 8 hour day, and you are taking 1/2 days off, right?
Your Company does not have a 9 hour work day, which leaves you with 1 hour for lunch.
If your company has a 8 hour work shift per your schedule, then, you do not get lunch. Or the staff is eating WHILE working.

TALK to your Boss or HR person about this. Per company policy.

That would be company policy and you need to talk with them, but it depends on how long of a lunch you normally take. You should split your day in 2 equals halves.

Where I work people aren't paid for lunch...so they are here for 8 1/2 or 9 hours depending on how long there lunch is.

Do you get paid for your lunch working 9-5?
A half vacation day is 4 hours...you don't get to leave an hour early for lunch cause you don't GET lunch for a half day.

You should be able to ask your supervisor the policy. That would be much more accurate than what WE can tell you.

Discuss it with your employer.

I took my vacation in chunks, meaning I would take one day on a Friday and a day on a Monday giving me a 4 day weekend. They loved that as opposed to me taking my vacation all at one time and I got to break it up so that I could plan things with my kids. It worked well for us.

If you have a proposal and you are looking to burn hours as opposed to days, present your employer with it.

In California, you can be on the clock for 5 hours without a lunch break. However, you can't work more than 6 hours that day in total.

If your employer would be happy to have you for half days as opposed to missing you for full days at a time, just present it in such a way that they will realize it's best for them.

My employers never want me gone, even when I'm entitled to it. They are pretty willing to work with me.

Best wishes.

Where I work, we start work between 7 and 8am, so we would work 4 hours straight & leave. Our hour lunch is unpaid.

Can you come in at 8am & leave at noon?

Have you checked with your employer? I'm sure this varies greatly.

If you work 8 hours with a lunch included, I'm going to guess that you get a 30 min lunch, so if you take 4 hours vacation time

8 - 4 with a 30 min lunch = 1 pm
8 - 4 - 30 min lunch = 12:30p

lol, I thought you were from my company. I can't get a straight answer from Hr. I work 7.5 hrs, I am paid for a half hour lunch, but I have an early lunch at 11-11:30 then i had duties until 12:30.

I was told I could take a half day 8-11:30 they would pay me 3.75 for the 3.5 I was gone,
But if i take an afternoon off, I have to stay until 12:30 then I can leave from 12:30-3 and for that 2.5 hrs I get paid 3.75 which makes no sense to me as that puts me over the 7.5 hrs i 'm supposed ot work in a day which puts me into overtime, weird.
