HI all. I took my 11 1/2 month old daughter to a new allergist yesterday for another opinion and he wants us for now to take her off dairy products. We are going to try everything we can to help her but i've never had to buy non dairy items. I bought her some soy milk/yogurts yesterday but what are some other things I can get for her? i've looked at the labels of the snacks we usually give her and they have some form of milk products in them (they either say Milk or "from milk).. so i'm really confused right now.. thanks for help

What can I do next?

My son is dairy free and its pretty easy, actually. Anything with coconut milk/oil is fine, as is soy, almond, rice, and they even have hemp and oat milk now. Earth's Best makes a lot of snack that are dairy free. The Vanilla Cookies are my son's favorite. There are also lots of snacks that are dairy free like pretzels but you have to make sure they don't have butter. My son also eats pasta but make sure the sauce doesn't have cheese it in. Soy cheese on pizza tastes ok and soy yogurt is ok too. My son eats a lot of fruit and since its summer, it all tastes so wonderful now! Ask your doctor what you should give in terms of a calcium supplement. Lots of them are dairy based so make sure the one you give is not.

There are all kinds of non dairy "milks"...soy, rice, coconut, almond...and they come in lots of flavors, too. Also, we use non-dairy cheese. If your daughter doesn't have a taste for cheese yet, you can give her the vegan cheese slices (made from rice.) Tofutti makes good dairy-free ice cream. :)

Coconut milk has no dairy in it, to answer the question below. :) I love it, but my ped says I shouldn't give it because of it's high sat fat content. However, I've done a lot of research and some resources insist it's the best kind of sat fat you can have, etc.

I would call back the allergist and ask for a list of things she Can eat. Or refer me to a nutritionist for help.

is cocounut milk considered 'dairy' ??

Mrs. Lavallie - thanks for the info. I have heard from a nutritionist that coconut milk is great - much better for you than cow's milk and full of nutrients. It's more concentrated than cows milk, so you need only 1/2 a cup, let's say, to get the same nutrients you might get from 1 cup of a different milk.
