We use the large kind that cover the entire ear meant for loud noises like power tools. We've had 2 pairs over the years and bought both at Home Depot.
We are taking our son to his first Monster Jam this weekend. He is so excited he hardly can stand the wait. The only problem is that I'm concerned with the noise level. I'm looking for some ear protection for him. He's just about 3, so still too small for those foam ear inserts. Any ideas?

I know you said the foam ones are too small for his ears, but I'm sure they'll fit. I've used them on my 2 y.o. twins when we flew on a C-17 and they worked just fine. In all likelihood he won't want to wear them because it's a strange feeling so I wouldn't spend too much money on trying to protect his ears.
I haven't read all of your answers yet. But if you don't have time for the fancy headphones- and your son is OK with it. Go to the drugstore and get the wax ear plugs. My daughter wore them and a hat on her head. They must have worked as she actually fell asleep during a Seahawks football game.
He can use the ear foam inserts. You have to squeeze them down pretty good and pop them in before they start expanding again. You can add to those a pair of "ear muffs" that are used on gun ranges. They def block out the noise. Check wal-mart or a sporting good store.
The headphones are fantastic! We ordered some off of Amazon for kids, but I'm not finding the ones we purchased on there right now -you can google them though or do your own Amazon search. Many stores carry them as well. They've been a lifesaver for our oldest and us! Ours cost $14.00 and you can't hear anything when you put them on. They satisfy my son very well who flips out over loud noises and has extreme noise sensitivity.
We bought the noise canceling headphones for my doctor. They hurt my ears. With no music on, I fell like they are sucking on my ears. Do you already have them? They are $300.00 +
Get the squishier foam ones. (I find that the orange ones are squishier.) Some are too hard for little ears.
I second Peltor. I got them from Amazon and was unable to find them at a store locally in the Seattle area.
Hi A.,
I got this info from a friend who used them for her daughter. She slept through the football games and Mom says she can't hear anything.
The brand is Peltor and they are their toddler/kid ear muffs. The first site listed below is the site we purchased them from...but I've also given you another site I found.

When my son went last year at age 4, he used headphones that people use at shooting ranges. I think my brother found them at BiMart. They worked well for him. My husband was the one who took him to the Monster Jam, and he said there was no way he could have done it without the headphones. They were even in a box suite thing, and he still had to wear them. Good luck!
