No Period, but Want to Try Conceiving...

Hello,

I know I've asked a similar question but everyone always has such good advice here...

Our baby is 8.5 months old and loves to nurse...I don't want to wean her prematurely, but we would like to start trying for another baby since we're in our mid 30's. I have not gotten a period yet, and I'm wondering if we should just go ahead and start actively trying, or if it's pointless since I'm still nursing and not menstruating? I've heard that it is possible to get pregnant without having resumed menstruation, but that it's very difficult under those circumstances to conceive.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

You might want to try using basal body temperature (BBT) and charting your cycle.

An easy way to learn how to do this is to either go to www.fertilityfriend.com - they have great, easy to read/understand tutorials and you can do all your charting there. You may also wish to read the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler.

whether or not you're having a period isn't the issue, it's whether or not you're ovulating. not really any way to tell if you are ovulating without medical testing. it's not gonna hurt anything to try - but be aware that your body really needs a full year to recover to maximize your chances at a successful, smooth pregnancy. start trying, be sure to eat plenty and take a prenatal vitamin - if you're ovulating, maybe you'll get lucky and conceive, if you're not, you guys will have some fun practicing.

It is very possible to conceive while pregnant, and since your daughter is 8 months old, the amount of milk your producing is less. You're likely to be getting your period back very soon (mine came back at 10 months, and that was while nursing twins). Even without having your period, you can get pregnant.

This may depend also on how much you are nursing. You might just cut back and see if that helps. Definitely keep up on your nutrition.
