I had my baby two days ago, he started nursing great and now he is mad. I feel like he is just not getting anything. I have been giving him a few oz of formula here and there and I have tried pumping. I hardly get anything when I pump, just a few drops of colastrums. When is the milk supposed to come? I am getting a bit discouraged :/ I really wanted to bf

What can I do next?

Don't pump and don't give formula. Just nurse your son often and your milk will come in soon. It usually takes a couple days for it to happen. In the meantime he'll do fine with the body fat he was born with along with your colostrum. Don't get discouraged. It can take a while for you and the baby to feel comfortable and set in to breastfeeding. You can do it!

I would quit giving formula... they need VERY little the first few days of life. it's SO easy to get milk from a bottle, and then he gets on your breast and has to work and gets mad. babies are FAR more effective at getting milk out of you than any pump - much of milk letdown in the early days in hormonal/psychological - you looking down at your sweet baby actually helps your milk come out, hearing him cry will help as well. it DOES take a few days, don't give up yet! good luck and relax :)

It can take several days for your milk to come in. This is normal. Colostrum is amazing for your baby's immune and digestive systems. Just keep offering your breast frequently. I certainly wouldn't offer formula. Breastfeeding is completely about supply and demand. Your body needs to learn his true needs in order to make enough for him. Also, bottles are much easier for baby. If he gets used to bottles, he will get frustrated having to work for his milk. Hang in there. You will have milk soon.

Congratulations M.! It took four days for my milk to come in with my first baby. And three with my second. I wouldn't stress, the colostrum is usually enough for babies.

If you are at a hospital I would strongly recommend you request a lactation specialist visit your room. They can be extremely helpful and help ease your fears and answer your questions. I had one stop by my room with both kiddos. It just made me feel better!

If you are already home, a pediatrician, lactation specialist, ob or woman's health professional could also guide you.

Congrats!

It took me three days with both children for my milk to come in. When delivering doctor came to see me the day we were released, she told me to get her pre-made formula for the next few days because she said colostrum is not enough. I knew that getting her formula would mess with milk production, so I just nursed her, and sure enough, my milk came in. She is five months now, and no formula, and a champion nurser! Just hang in there, fellow momma!

I went through the same thing with my first baby, a c-section. It took several days for the colostrum to transition to milk, and there were about 12 hours there that were really rough on both of us! Just keep offering the breast, go ahead and let him "use you as a pacifier," the extra sucking will help get things started in the milk production department.
It will happen, don't get discouraged! I would not give him formula unless there is a medical concern- just keep breastfeeding. My rule for newborns was pretty much open mouth, insert boob :)
If you need further support, the LLL down in Tempe is great.

Be patient and keep trying. Like the other moms have said, it takes a few days for your milk to come in. The colostrum you're giving him now is really beneficial.

When my son was born via emergency C-section, he had some minor breathing problems, but just enough to land him in the Special Care Nursery at the hospital. He was under an oxygen hood for a while. While there, the nurses gave him those asinine 1oz bottles of formula that leak everywhere when you turn them upside down, even though I TOLD them I wanted to nurse him. After my 4 days in the hospital I had to go home without my baby because he wasn't nursing as well as they'd have liked. (insert swearing here) I came back the next day and kept him with me the whole time so the nurses didn't have a chance to give him those bottles. He did go home with me that 5th day, nursed like a champ all day long too.

He is now 10, and STILL if things don't come super easy to/for him, he gives up before really trying.

Point of my story: Keep trying to nurse. You guys WILL get it, sooner rather than later.

Lactation consultants are great - ask the hospital for a referral. If you're still in the hospital, one should come to visit you. Don't pump. Feed him every few hours. His sucking is stronger than a pump. A lactation consultant can check on his latch and stuff to make sure that everything is working for him. Often, if there is a problem, it's something the BABY is doing or not doing, not the mom.

No formula! You are confusing your body. It doesn't think it needs to produce it. Baby will be fine. Put him to your breast. The first few weeks are the hardest. Go to kellymom.org and research it. Cut the formula out ASAP. They have a article on how to wean from formula. You can do it. Just stick with it. Good luck.

Milk doesn't always come in the day your baby is born. The colostrum is good!!!

The formula is confusing YOUR body's milk production AND your son - congratulations by the way!!

Start pumping. Drink more water. Keep your stress level down as well.

YOU CAN DO THIS...do NOT give up and DO NOT get discouraged. I know it's easier said than done sometimes when you are tired, frustrated and want to do the best for your child.

Talk to your la leche league. Talk to your pediatrician to see if they have a lactation consultant on staff, then make the appointment.

YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
