my daughter makenzie (7 weeks old) hasnt really had a bowel movement for 3 days now...gassy but not any measureable poop (just tiny tiny bits a couple times)
before this started (or stopped? lol) she was poopy every time i changed her, so im a little worried. she doesnt seem uncomfortable or anything like that..and i know sometimes BMs can drop off after 6 weeks or so, it just seems like such a drastic change. ive read the other post about this and im hoping its the same for us....but makenzie is a bit younger and im just worried :/

What can I do next?

Hello,
I can remember when my daughter had trouble with that. The best thing for her was to lay her on her back and hold her feet gently pushing her knees up towards her stomach. I don't know why that works but it would be worth a try. Good luck.

M., so long as she is not fussy and breastfeeding is going well, don't worry about it. There isn't much to "eliminate" from breastmilk and Makenzie is most likely using every last bit of it for her rapidly growing body. Babies who are strickly breastfed also typically do not suffer from constipation, so unless she's getting some formula in there or starts to show some signs of discomfort, put your mind at ease and continue to enjoy your new baby girl and Alexis. Congratulations on your new little one!

My son only pooped once a week from 1 month old until he started eating solids. This is really normal. Breast milk is a whole food and converted to energy better than formula.

it may be something in your diet. have you eaten anything different in the last week or so? i would try changing something, or try drinking more water between nursings. if it was bottlefeeding you could try a tiny bit of prune juice in water (i had to do that around 2 mo for my son), but since shes breastfed maybe ask the ped what would help. good luck!

Does she eat formula or breast milk? I think that makes a big difference. I think that formula might cause constipation in babies, but I'm no expert.

Hi M.!
It's all normal, since she is growing, and her digestive system is maturing.
It also can be a sign of you eating something that caused it, which is completely normal too!
If she doesn't feel uncomfortable and nursing good, she is fine!
If you are still worried though, call the doctor! When my babe was that young, our pedi advised us to give him some prune juice diluted with water, and it really helped!

Breastfed babies sometimes can go a week or so without pooping. I know its really odd but I have heard it alot. My son when little used to go up to 5 days sometimes and then would do a huge one which was completely soft so it wasn't like he was constipated. Unless she is in pain I wouldn't worry yet.

The same thing happened with my daughter around the same age. The dr said not to worry unless it was more than a week (!). Ever since then (she is almost 4 months now) she has only had BMs 2 or 3 times a week... which is rather nice!
