No Baby, No Heartbeat--what Now??

I found out in early December that I was pregnant...had 3 positive HPTs and one blood test at the OBGYN's office that confirmed it. However, I went last Friday for my 1st OB appointment (about 7 1/2-8 weeks pregnant) and the ultrasound revealed a sac, but no baby growing inside it. We are devestated, but will try again. I am wondering if this has happened to any other moms out there and what you had to do. My OB strongly suggested scheduling a D&C, but i'm terrified of that. It may be inevitable, and I can accept that, but I certainly don't want it.
Those who've had this happen, how long did it take you to start bleeding or did you have to have a D&C? I don't know how long I can safely wait for my body to "get the memo" that it's not pregnant anymore.
Thanks, Mamas!

I had a missed miscarriage with my first pregnancy. I spotted at 6 weeks, was tol dnot to worry so I didn't, then spotted again at 10 weeks, went in for an ultrasound to find a baby that had stopped growing at 6 weeks. I had carried the baby for a month after it had passed, my body never did "get the memo" so I went in for a D and E (same as D and C) but the hospital was booked for a week so I waited a long dreadful week knowing I was carrying a lost little one. The D and E was easy, no pain, a little bleeding after, my legs were a little sore after and I was sleepy but that was it. I'm now pg with #3.

I've not had a blighted ovum, but I've gone in and not had a heartbeat before. I requested an u/s just before my D&E just to be reassured that there hadn't been a change and a heartbeat didn't suddenly appear. I'm sorry you're having to go through this. It's a loss whether a baby is in the sac or not.

I think that you need to do whatever you feel comfortable with. The u/s before the procedure reassured me. If you want to wait for things to take place naturally it may take a few weeks before the actual m/c begins. I couldn't wait for thing to occur on their own due to my work schedule and not know where I'd be and what discomfort I'd have. So, I just went with the D&E. Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Sorry to hear that. I miscarried in October at 12 weeks. I woke up one morning and was spotting. I had no signs such as cramping before that. I went to the doctor for an ultrasound and they told me that the baby had not grown since about eight weeks. They scheduled me for an D&C that would take place a week or so later. They wanted to see if my body would take care of it first. I continued to spot and about four days after the initial spotting, I had a horrible night of labor style cramping and bleeding. I went in two days before my scheduled D&C for another ultrasound to confirm whether or not I had passed everything and I had. They also did some blood work to check that my HCG level were down. Thankfully, I did not have to have surgery, but I was still spotting and sore for weeks. I also had a lot of problems mentally and emotionally for weeks because my hormones were out of whack until I finally had a period in early December. I hope you recover much more quickly than I did. We already have a two year old daughter; I still don't know if I want to try again. Take care.

Hi K., I'm sorry...
My story is similar, I was pregnant and went in for my first ultrasound at around 8 weeks and there was a heartbeat. About a week later I had some spotting and the doc told me to come in just to be safe but not to worry. When he did a second ultrasound there was no heartbeat and the baby had not grown at all. He told me to go home and wait for my body to figure it out... 6 days after that appt I started getting really bad cramps and bleeding very heavy. I went into the docter the next day and another ultrasound revealed that I did not need a D&C. So it took almost a week for my body to 'get the memo'...
