A silly little thing, but does anyone know if all those pencils my daughter has received for Valentine's Day, birthdays, etc. are considered #2 pencils? We're starting our back to school shopping and, of course, #2 pencils are on the list. We have a TON of these pencils that she has received. Can I use them for school?

What can I do next?

The only thing I've even noticed is my son's school won't allow anything but the yellow because they mess up the pencil sharpeners. otherwise yes they are number 2 pencils. (and i refuse to send my kids to school with 101 pencils or 6 extra folders and all the other crazy junk, because teachers do pool such things and I shouldn't have to pay for other students supplies, some teachers even SELL the supplies back to the kids, I keep my supplies at home and let them take what they need and replenish as needed, but maybe that's just me)

I teach third grade and I wouldn't care one bit if she brought those in. However, just know, that a lot of teachers pool the pencils. So, she may or may not get to keep them. I'm not sure if that matters to her or not. I pool the pencils in my classroom so that they can be resharpened every couple of days. Oh, and in answer to your question, nearly all of those cutesy ones are No. 2 pencils. :)

Well, chances are the teacher won't know either!

I think the number has to do with the hardness of the lead and how dark it writes. If it seems as dark as a regular pencil, I wouldn't worry.

in my so many years i've learned that any pencil is #2 unless otherwise stated on the pencil. and really the only time it matters is when they take those bubble tests because the test reader needs a certain darkness to read the test and i guess #1's just don't cut it.

You can get a #2 pencil and compare how dark and soft the leads are.

Generally, the #2 is a medium soft lead, able to put down a good dark line without too much pressure, but not so soft that it leaves behind alot of messy graphite powder or smudges. If the pencils you have are able to do this, they should be fine for schoolwork.

we used them for school, but they are really not as good as #2. The lead breaks very easily on the decorated ones. My son's teacher sent home a note requesting I send in more #2's for him. She also was mad because we bought the blue colored glue instead of the white. Go figure.
