Nipple Discharge and itching...Not Nursing

Let me start with my background...I have an almost 17 month old son, I nursed until he was 14 months old, got my period back when he was 13 months old. Generally healthy 24 yr old woman. In the past 2-3 days my nipples have been itchy. Today I was looking at them to see if I could figure out a reason other then dryness (my skin tends toward being really dry and itchy, especially in the winter months). Both nipples are "oozing" a yellowish discharge, I noticed one was wet so I squeezed them and thats when it came out, they aren't "squirting" like with breastmilk. Any idea what this is? I looked on webmd and that wasn't any help. Thanks to all the wonderful woman who help with problems before it comes to calling the dr! :-)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well by this morning everything is back to normal. But I have called to get in for a physical just to make sure everything is ok. Thanks!

Some times hormonal issues can cause this. If you are on a birth control I'd consider changing to a low dose

I think I would call and talk to a nurse none the less. I did notice after I stopped nursing I would still be able to get some sort of liquid out again and it was a lot like that first milk that comes and not so much like the regular breast milk you get later on and yes more like oozing and not squirting. I figured it's just a little bit of the milk left in the breasts but if you are itching along with it, it's possible that you may have some sort of infection.

I really dont have any real advice, I would call first..

Hi M.,
Please call your doctor and tell them exactly what is going on. I don't want to scare you but discharge can be a sign of some serious problems even in young women. Please call just to make sure nothing is going on.
Good luck,
L.
