Nipple Blister

Hi!
I have mastitis and a blister on my nipple - both on the same breast. I've been taking antibiotics for the mastitis for a week now. My breast aches so badly - still hot, feel burning sensations, hurts when I feed on that breast, etc. I'm not sure if I'm feeling the side effects of both or if it is just the nipple blister. I've never had either before. My nipple blister now has a hard scab feeling to it. Am I supposed to just let it heal on its own? I read online that I'm supposed to use my fingernail to peel the top of the blister off. I can't imagine doing that!!! Does it hurt? I can't even tell where I would try to start to peel it off. How long do nipple blisters last and how much longer am I going to be in pain? For the mastitis part...when is it expected to feel relief? If I didn't have the nipple blister maybe I would have relief?
Thanks Mamas!

What can I do next?

I have had the blisters before & also clogged ducts... they can take a few weeks to heal sometimes. I know with the clogged ducts I was told to put the baby's chin lined up with the clogged duct. So if the clogged duct is on the lower side (under) I had to lay on my side & nurse laying down tummy to tummy... I hated that possition, but it did help. Since where ever they chin is, they have more power or sucktion. Also, sometime the blisters are caused by improper latch... make sure you get as much of the nipple & brown area around it in the baby's mouth as you can. If you need to extract a little milk to get that area a little softer so the baby can latch better.

Oh, sound odd... but milk will help heal your nipple. Make sure that you let a little milk out and on the soar/blister. Then air dry - it will help to heal the blister.

I wish you a speedy heal... keep trying - I know they hurt! But you are doing the best for both you and your baby. If it dosen't heal soon - go see the doctor.

Major bummer. Nipple blisters are very painful - agonizing. I've had a nipple blister and I did pick at it. It eventually popped when my DS was nursing. It took a little over a week to heal completely.

I've never had mastisis, just frequent clogged milk ducts, so I can't speak to that.

My advise is to continue to nurse as much as you can on the infected breast. If you leave it alone the problem will just fester. Nursing is always the answer:)

Kellymom is my most favorite resource for breastfeeding help. They are even better than before after they recently re did their website. I highly recommend it to any breastfeeding mother!

You need to get the milk and infection drained out of the breast.
Yes, it's going to hurt until you get the dried up milk moving and out of there and the infection cleared out. Just the antibiotics alone aren't going to be totally effectual if you still have everything sitting there.

Are you still breastfeeding/pumping that breast? Because if you aren't that could be part of the problem. Whenever you have a clogged duct/mastitis you are supposed to pump/nurse the affected breast as much as possible, even if it hurts - any engorgement will only make your condition worse and last longer.
If you have been on abx for a week, pumping or nursing the affected breast and you still have pain and hotness you have to go back to your doctor and will probably need a different antibiotic. Anytime when you are on antibiotics you should see an improvement in symptoms within 3 days or the drug isn't working properly.
Good luck.
