Nighttime Potty Training Boys.

I have twin 32 month old boys. They are potty trained during the day and doing wonderfully. We've always had them in diapers at night because they always wake up wet. Against my advice, my husband decided last weekend to put them in their underwear at night and just "see what happens." I really don't think they're ready for that yet. Of course, they woke up wet. In fact, they wet multiple times both nights. Luckily for me, my husband was the one to clean them up in the middle of the night, since it was his idea in the first place. (What a sweetie, huh?). When I told him that it may be years before our boys are night time potty trained, he had a really hard time believing that, and thought that they should be ready sooner than that since they're done for the daytime. So, to my question: What is the age your boys were able to sleep at night without diapers or pull-ups? Our neighbor's boy who is turning 8 this year still wears pull ups and wakes up wet most mornings. I'm pretty sure my little brother was wearing pull ups at night when he was 9 and probably even later. Another neighbor boy (different family) is just barely 3 and is in underwear at all times including at night and does just fine. So I realize there's a wide range. I just wanted to get a feel for what all of you have found so I can bring some better information to the next conversation about it with my darling hubby. Thanks mamas!

What can I do next?

It varies for every child. TO be honest there is no such thing as night time training. It is about how their body has developed. You can help it along by no fluids within a few hours of bedtime, no drinks in their rooms and make sure they pee right before bed, otherwise you have to wait until they wake up dry. ALl children are different. My son was potty trained completely at 3 and it took a while longer for him to start waking up dry. When he went five days waking dry I removed the pullups and did underwear. We had only one accident at night. Now he is aware enough to wake up and go pee and go back to bed if he has to go but can go 11 hours without having to.
I don't alllow drinks other then when brushing after dinner though and he goes before we read bedtime stories then tries one more time after and he seems to do well with that.
Tell your husband there isn't anything you can do about it but give it time. Kids have no control when they are sleeping, especially if they are sound sleepers. When their bladder is ready they will be. They are young still, so give it time! Most boys don't even get it 100% until 3 1/2 is the average for day time training too so you are ahead of the game.

Our older son was fine by his third birthday, maybe a little before. I don't really remember. Our 2 1/2 yo wakes up dry most morning, but he still likes to wear diapers. We aren't pushing it. I've always been afraid to push in this area for fear of creating problems later. I know how expensive diapers are, and it's nice to be rid of them, but I'd say hang in there and it will happen. Maybe not when we want, but eventually. I think our little guy is about 32 months, too. I'm too tired to do the math this morning. :) GL!

My 6 1/2 yo and my 5 yo are still sleeping with pull ups at night. The 6 1/2 yo can stay dry about 1-2 nights a week now. I think this can be a long process. :)

So I don't personally have an experience with this quite yet, but my mom always did this with everyone of her kids (there are 7 of us) and I am planning on doing it as soon my little one gets old enough.
She would not give them any drinks an hour before bedtime and then potty time before bed. She would then wake them up and sit them on the potty and then put them back in bed (and like when they were little didn't play or talk to them so they would go back to sleep). That way they could learn the signs during the night like they did during the day.
Like you said, there are a wide range of things. You just need to find what works for you :) Good luck!

You are doing fantastic job on having two little boys potty trained before they are three. That is quite a feat. My boys were able to stay dry at night right after they were able to stay dry in the day. I have a friend who has a son that did not stay dry at night until age twelve. It really depends on the child. As far as I know, there is not a trick to night potty training. Just make sure they go to the bathroom before bed. Little boys (especially) play hard and sleep sound. It is an involuntary action that controls the bladder at night. Just don't stress and it will come with time.

Both my boys still wear pull-ups at night. The older one just turned 5 and still can't wake up in the middle of the night to go. The younger one is not quite three yet so I don't expect him to do it anytime soon. It really depends on the kid though. Both my boys are pretty good sleepers and don't rouse easily so I think it may take them awhile. Good luck!!
