My son is 13 months old. the last few weeks he wakes up between 3-5a.m. with soaking wet clothes and sheets. We have started limiting his bedtime milk - but it doesn't seem to help too much. i have been getting up around 2:00 to change his diapers before he has this issue -- but that can't be the solution!! he is wearing huggies nighttime diapers.

Any suggestions? How much milk do your little ones get before bed?? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

My son does this when he is too cold at night. also i do think that a larger size diaper will help.

When my son had that problem i had to change to the net size up in the diaper. You may also need to try a different brand. Luvs worked best for my son.

We occasionally have this problem too with our 23 month old. We do what someone else mentioned on here - change her diaper when we go to bed. She's usually been down for about 3 hours by the time we go to sleep, so if we change her before we go to bed, it's usually not a problem. Kind of a pain, I know, but less of a pain to waking up to a crying baby and having to change jammies and sheets in the night! Good luck!

Hi T.-

I agree with one of the previous posts- speak with his doctor about this. Diabetes is rare, but this is one of the signs. I would have him checked to rule it out.

Is it possible he's too hot when he's sleeping? Maybe he's wearing too warm of clothing, or is sleeping with a warm blanket? My little brother used to do the same thing when he got too hot at night.

Hope you get to the bottom of this soon!

:-) T.

I started using the Diaper Doublers from Babies R Us as suggested by other moms on here. They have helped us tremendously! You can also use cheap sanitary napkins or panty liners. I started using the thicker Kotex liners for my daughter when she takes naps and the doublers at night. I didn’t want to spend money on the night time diapers since they’re so expensive and the doublers are like $3 for 30 of them. I just use them with our regular diapers. We love Target’s brand actually. They worked better for us than any other brand. I also put the Gerber rubber pants on her when she sleeps. I recommend going a size up on those. She’s 15 months and we have the 18-24 month size. Finally, we use the ultimate crib sheets so that if all of these fail, we don't have to go through the hassle of changing her entire sheet. I've found them the cheapest on babyride.com They also carry them at Babies R Us or at least they use to.

I have 4 children and had similiar problems, I used the huggies night time diapers w/ the diaper doublers (I always found them at walgreens, in case you can't find them anywhere else), I also used rubber pants. I found these rubber pants at JCPenney that have terry cloth inside them, and between all of these things that helped my kids (3 of them boys):)

Your son might not be wetting himself. My mother in law thought the same thing with my husband and he just sweated to much while he slept.

Huggies ALWAYS leaked on my boys. I switched to Luvs. They prevented leaks much better and they're cheaper! Like other mamas have said, when the diapers started leaking all the time, I moved up a size.

Hi, Tracy M! My advice is, ditch the diapers. I had the same trouble w/ huggies and luvs. Believe it or not, I've had the best luck with the WalMart brand White Cloud diapers. If you have anti-WalMart issues, then I suggest you try pampers-- more pricey, but better absorbancy. Gog bless and get some sleep! :-)

Best thing that has worked for us is putting jammies on that old the diaper in, so it does not loosen at night in the waist. Also we have learned he hard way that we really need to just change our little guy when we go to bed. That is usually a few hours after he has and then we find there are many mornings that he even has a dry diaper when he wakes up. We have had great luck with the huggies nighttime but if you are using pull-ups they are pretty much useless at keeping the leaks from happening at night. So I would steer clear from them. Just keep in mind, the older they get the more that they will pee at one time. So don't be to worried about it. Hope this helps :)

Have you tried buying a larger size diaper for night time? Usually when our kids have started leaking out of a diaper at night, it is time to go up a size, but that may only be necessary for a night time diaper.

I had to chuckle when someone mentioned a maxi pad. We have a 7 year old who has to sleep in Goodnights because he wets the bed and recently he started soaking out of them. We are about 45 minutes away from Babies R Us so I didn't want to go there to buy the doublers, so I suggested a maxi pad, my husband was so totally against it, I thought it was funny :)

I would definitely bring it up with the Dr. although my daughter was having a similar issue (she is fine) so we just use Huggies overnight diapers now. They sell them at Babies R Us.

We had this trouble with our son at this age, until he was about 2. Here's what we did:
No drinks after 6pm
We changed his diaper when WE went to bed. We used Luvs, a size LARGER than usual, and then covered the diaper with plastic pants (the kind my mom used to use when she cloth diapered). They are super easy cause you can just hand wash/rinse them to use the next night if it gets wet.
Good luck!

My son is now 18 months, and get no bedtime milk. But, when he was 13 months, I allowed him about 4 ounces of milk from a sippy cup. Interestingly enough, he choose to stop drinking milk at bedtime once we started brushing his teeth with training toothpaste. Perhaps he didn't like the taste in his clean mouth.
So, I don't know if that helps or not, but hopefully it does somewhat. Also, is it possible that you need to try a different diaper at bedtime? Again, my son doesn't do well with any diaper but the Pampers Cruisers. Anything else he leaks right out of.

I would continue to watch your son for the consistent soaking of his diapers, and also his fluid consumption. My son was diagnosed with diabetes at age 3, with no family history.
He was waking up soaked from head to toe. He was also drinking, and drinking, and drinking. We took him to the doctor and they sent us directly to the hospital and we were admitted and stayed 5 days. His blood sugar was 750.
If you can see signs of drinking and not being able to quench his thirst, over-eating, irritability, and flushed face, check with your doctor. We let it go 2 weeks, and then received the devasting news.
Our first son used the Huggies overnights and they worked well. We were also fans of Luvs. Both boys were very skinny, and they seemed to hold up best, not to mention cheaper.
Cutting your son off from fluids is not the solution. He needs to stay hydrated. Once you are potty training then I would agree with that solution, but for now he is too young.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions about diabetes. We are 3 years in, and my son is doing great.

I would talk to your doctor about it. Unfortunately sometimes excessive wetting can be a sign of diabetes. He's awful young, but worth getting it checked out anyway.

Both my sons have done this and still do from time to time. Yes, they drink alot so I have cut down night time drinks but they sometimes wet through their diapers anyways. Now that the other moms mentioned diabetes of course check it out but I think it's normal.
Try buying bigger diapers.
No drinks 1 hour before bed time.
Change diaper in middle of night. (Annoying, yes, but I had to do this too about this age also for a little while).
Best of luck.

Hi T.,

I'd say the best thing you can do is to give him his milk at dinner and no more. This way he'll get a diaper change before bed and his bladder will have been given time to empty a bit before bed time. He might have a hard time for a few days, but it is the best thing. Milk is very heavy on the bladder and right before bed is what will cause this problem. If he "must" have a drink in bed, give him water in his sippy- juice is bad for the teeth when they go to bed with it. I think you'll find that this will help. Trust me, I have twins, and I would not want to be getting up at 2 am just for diaper changes. Make your kids follow "your" schedule as much as possible, don't let them make the schedule. It will keep you sane :) Good luck, C.

My boys last drink was at 7:00pm usually. It sounds like he is holding it in. You could try a clean diaper 1 hour before bed. Sometimes I used a diaper doubler, which is an little absorbent piece of cloth you put in the diaper.

Could it be his position? I noticed with my second son who like to sleep on his belly he was more prone to messing himself. I had to put the diaper on pretty tight to his body and make sure it was the correct size. HTH
