Nighttime Accidents and Antibiotics

My daughter just turned 4 and has been potty trained for over a year. Of course, she has the occasional accidents at night but I would say one every 6-8 weeks is the norm. Well, she developed her second strep infection in less than a month and is now on an antibiotic . This is a new antibiotic than the first time. Ever since she started the antibiotic she has had an accident every night which is, of course, interrupting all of our sleep. Nothing else has changed - same (or less) liquid intake which stops after dinner, potty right before bed, etc. Could the antibiotic be causing this? I am at my wits end with laundry!!! :)

What can I do next?

I don't know for sure, but I will tell you that I just posted the same type of question about a week or so ago... My son started antibiotics for strep and all of the sudden we were having accidents nightly, when we RARELY had them before. Same as your daughter, my son is four and has been potty trained for a year or so now... So it caught us off guard and we were curious if the antibiotics were somehow related. Can't say definitively, of course, but your situation makes me feel like perhaps were weren't losing our minds thinking it could be antibiotics. :-) He's off them for about 3 days now and we have had no accidents in 3 days. Hmmmm... Odd though, isn't it?

Yes it could. It can also cause yeast infections which cause itching and discomfort.
I would let the doc know what is going on she may be having a reaction, and put her in overnight pullups until she is finished with the medicine.

sometimes antibiotics can casue yeast infections, which in turn can cause the nighttime accidents.. when ever my kids are on antibiotics, i also give them extra yoururt and cranberry juice to help prevent that.. good luck and mayeb for the time being, a packege of pull ups would help... there is a reason they make them so big!

My daughter at that age did develop an reaction from an antibiotic with her intestines. If it is out the the norm you should at least tell the doctor what is going on because I waited to late and caused more damage to her body. Just call doctors and see if she needs to stop the antibotic or switch. Good luck!

antibiotics can mess up your GI system, wiping out all the good bacteria in the gut. Anytime I havae to be on antibiotics, I take acidophilos (you can get at health good store, I use a powder that I get at whole Foods - it's expensive, but worth it for me - I can't do dairy or eat yogurt). Definately mention it to your daughter's Dr., but some of them are clueless about the impact of antibiotics on the rest of the system. I have been told by Dr's there is nothing you can do to prevent a secondary yeast infection (common on antibiotics), when there IS something you can do, and that is take the acidophilos (or eat lots of yogurt or other foods with a lot of prebiotics and probiotics).

It may be a yeast infection causing the problems with accidents.
Talk to the Dr., start her on yogurt (or other food containing probiotics - 2x/day if possible), and as other people mentioned, go with the pull ups for the time being - easier than laundry etc in the middle of the night!
Good Luck!
