Nightime Underwear

Hi Mommies!
Does anyone know of an underwear that I can put my newly potty trained 3 year old in at night? He is outgrowing the leftover diapers, and I really don't want to start with pull ups if necessary. I checked out the ones from One Step Ahead, but the reviews were bad due to lots of leaking. We need something that he can pee in, but that won't get all over his bed. Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

Hi B.,
There's a website: www.pottyscotty.com
They have tons of training aids. I'm not at the night time training myself - we're still working on day time :o) But I did notice they had night time training pants for boys. I can't vouch for them as I haven't used that particular product, but I'm using the day time training pants and they are really absorbant. Also, consider using a waterproof mattress protector (one step ahead has them). Before we started training, my son would sometimes wet through his diaper. Not a big deal in a crib, but in his big boy bed with a mattress, I was worried. No matter how wet his is (sometimes leaking through his pajamas) his mattress stays dry with the protector. Good luck and let us know what works :o)

B., my son wears Good Nites at night --they come in a blue package in the diaper aisle --he wakes up wet a few nights a week --the regular pull ups were not holding it all in --the good nites are made for older children who wet the bed --my son is four and weighs 42 lbs -he is in a good night for a 38-65 lb range -and they never leak thru to pajamas or sheets! Good luck!
They also make boy and girl styles including boxers for boys -my son does not like those but they are available.

Hi, I know you said you don't want to but I used pull ups for about six months after daughter potty trained. Most of the time it was dry when she woke and we would save for the next night.

Try looking at the cloth diaper sites. I am not sure how much your son pees but you could do and all in one (which is similar to a diaper but you can wash it so you don't have to keep buying them) or training pants with an insert/soaker and plastic pants over those. The up front cost might be a little more but since you wash them you end up saving money in the long run.

I use GoodNights. Right now they have some that look like boxer shorts. For my first son I tried a cloth with rubber/plastic shell from One Step....they were washable and that is why I chosed them....but he peed, I washed and they still smelled of urine!!! I threw them out, and for the price, I could have bought disposable. My 3 yr old woke up dry this morning, he had a "pull up" on, I just saved it for tonight. Potty training can be expensive!!! Good Luck. Oh, my son said he wanted to try underwear at bed, he did fine and then not so fine, I was washing his bed everyday....so we are back to the pull ups. But he doesnt mind wearing the ones like boxers. He wears them like shorts with a jammie shirt.

HI B.,
I am a grandma but I think I can give you some helpful advice. If you child is still peeing at night, either buy a plastic sheet to go over the mattress if you don't want to use pull ups. That's how I did it. However, you and your child will sleep better if he wears a pull up or night diaper. When he wakes up dry, consistantly then you will know he is ready to be free of night diapers. Don't stress too much about it.

We did not use big boy pants at night until our son's woke up dry in the morning. We did this for about a month. They used diapers until then.

Hope this helps.

I know you said you didn't want to start pull-ups, but the huggies night-time pull-ups work really well. We just make sure and don't put it on until he is ready to get in bed (after he's gone in the potty for the last time) and change him to underware as soon as he gets up. So far, it's worked well.

This is a different approach...maybe not what you're looking for, but just in case...
We put our daughter in cloth training pants at night (we tell her they're nighttime big girl underwear) and bring her to the potty around 11:30 before we go to bed. She barely wakes up, but we sit her down and she pees and then we bring her back to bed. She's woken up dry every morning. The training pants will prevent a complete disaster if she did pee.
Good luck with potty training. If you're looking for something that will absorb like a diaper, I'd recommend Pampers Easy Ups. We used them for a long time and they never leaked.

HONESTLY I raised my girls, and then I helped with my grandchildren. when my girls were growing up we had the really heavy underpants and rubber pants, and i may as well have set them on the bed and said go pee. their beds were wet every night if they had an accident. with the grandchildren, the pull ups were wonderful, and if they did not have an accident, i had boys for him and girls for her. they wore them again, they even wore their niece underpants under them so that they felt the wet if they wet during the night. this helped them to be more aware and night train a little eaiser. I know you wanted something else, but HONESTLY pullups are the ticket today. Plus with little boys.....well they really make a mess when they pee in bed if they are not protected.

Also, if they wake up in the night and come to snuggle with Mommy for security, you won't end up with an accident in Mommy's bed.

Unless he is staying dry some nights, he might not be ready for nighttime potty training. If he is ready, what I recommend is regular underwear and washable hospital-style incontinence pads on top of his regular bed sheets. You can get them at any medical supply store. We had three and that was enough for us. This way, he gets the feedback he needs to wake up and be uncomfortable if he does have an accident. But his bed will stay dry.

Does your son regularly stay dry at night? Training during the day, when he is aware of the urge to use the toilet and go there, and staying dry at night are two totally different processes. If your son still regularly wets at night, I would continue to diaper him at bedtime. If he stays dry at night with the occasional accident, I'd say gtt the heavy duty cloth training pants and use with plastic pants like you'd use for cloth diapers.
Good luck

B. - I found EasyUps to be the best leakage prevention when my boys were/are that age. For my older son who sleeps so soundly that peeing doesn't even wake him, I use either Underjams or Goodnights which both hold the liquid well until they wake. Both usually have coupons in the smartsource pages also!
