Hi Moms,
My 3 year old son is leaking out of his diaper almost every night. What brand of "overnight" diapers have you tried? Do they work? Any other suggestions? Thanks so much.

So What Happened?

So last night I tried the Huggies overnight diapers in a size 4...as I was putting them on my son, I noticed that the legs holes seemed loose, but I decided to give them a shot. Unfortunately they leaked...and I realized that maybe the problem I am having is not just a capacity problem but a fit problem! My son is extremely small for his age, so I think I will have to try adding the cloth diaper, or pad to his regular diaper and see if that works! But maybe I'll give the Pampers a try first. Thanks so much for all your advice mamas, oh how I love this site!!!

I used Huggie overnights. My daughter used to leak so bad I would have to put a Huggies overnight with a regular diaper on top.

I used Huggies. Yes, they worked. You can also try a size bigger for night time. If your son is close to the next size, use Overnight. If he just moved up a size, try going one size bigger instead, because they'll be cheaper than overnights.

We're having the same problem, so I signed on to see what other moms suggested, but I wanted to mention that we are currently using the Kirkland diapers a mom suggested and they are not cutting it. I think the problem is not diaper capacity (he frequently wakes with a wet bed and a diaper only half-full) but the ability of a diaper to quickly absorb a large quantity directed in one place!!! He's a tummy-sleeper and the back of the diaper is almost always dry. I'm guessing that now when they are learning to hold it in for potty time, their bladders have a larger capacity, so those nightime releases are just too much for a traditional diaper. I'm going to try the toddler overnight versions and see if there is a difference. Good luck!

The ones that I think work the best are the Pampers Baby Dry (the 12 hour ones), they are wonderful and actually last all night long with no leaks.

We use a diaper cover over the regular one. A great brand is litewrap. It snaps & velcros on the front & lays very flat. It has never bothered my "tummy sleepers!"

At his age it's best to move towards an overnight diaper geared toward older kids. I have had the best experience with Pampers brand Underjams. Huggies makes a similar product called Goodnights but they ALWAYS leak for us. Sometimes the overnight store brand can work just as well. I used to buy the Kroger (King Soopers) brand of thier overnight diapers for big kids. They come in sizes S-M or L-XL.

Good Luck!

I use Huggies.
BUT, I also change my son's diaper, ONE time during the night.
This prevents an overflowing diaper, from leaking.

AND I have a waterproof bed pad under him. So, clean up despite leaks, are easy. I got my waterproof bed pads from Amazon. It is not plastic, but cloth. I have 4 of them, that I used for both my kids. Just in case.
The sheets never get soiled that way and all I have to wash is the bed pad.

I had to double up on my son for a while. I used a diaper and a pull up over it to help with leaks. I have heard putting a pad inside the diaper helps at night for extra obsorbancy, but don't ever tell your husband or son they might not like it. Ha ha.

I had this problem with a much younger baby. At first a double cloth worked fine, but then he started soaking through in about 4 hours (he's a very frequent night nurser). So when that stopped working we switched to a disposable. Not sure your guy's weight, but my little guy fit in Huggies size four, too. Anyway, the Huggies were awful. I even tried "sizing up" to no avail, still leaked. I switched to Pampers extra protection, size 5. First night was great, second night he was slightly damp. What I did after that was put a cloth diaper cover on over the top of the Pamper (we use cloth during the day so this was no big deal for us, you could probably find one cheap at a consignment shop if you don't have any). This works like a dream, sometimes the Pampers will poke out over the top if I don't put it on quite right or he nurses more than usual; his P-jams will be slightly damp but they're far from super soaked. I've also heard about putting a maxi pad in the diaper for extra absorbancey, but that seems like it'd be uncomfortable (I mean, I don't especially care for them myself) and it's seems like a hassle, not to mention it's one more thing to buy all the time. Similar concept, you could try putting a cloth diaper or hemp insert in there but it's a buy it once deal at least. Good luck!

We used Target brand diapers with my first and they worked great. We also tried to limit drinks at night so that he would not have to go as much when he was sleeping. We also limit drinks at night with out 2 year old who is potty trained and it seems to work where he might only get up once to go insted of 3 times.

With my petite little girl, they didn't have the overnight diapers that fit her properly (until well after she was potty trained)... I used a cloth diaper INSIDE a disposable.

My son is 3 years old, autistic, and not-yet-potty-trained. When we started having a problem with nighttime leaks, we began to take him potty right before bed and immediately at wake up. Most mornings, he still has a dry Pull up in the morning.

I used Pampers Extra Protection and they worked well with my daughter who moves around a lot at night. When I used the Extra Protection, I went up a size in the diaper. My daughter was wearing a size 3 at the time and the Extra Protection didn't start until size 4. They worked and fit well.

Hi! Honestly I tried every type of diaper when my daughter was still in them, and believe it or not Costco's kirkland brand diapers were the best and cheaper than most! They don't do the condensation thing that most diapers do, and they hold a LOT of pee.
If he is trying potty training, definately pee before bed! :)
