After my daughter was born I had "night sweats" and really thought nothing of it (hormomes yadda yadda). I also breastfed. I did get my thyroid level checked. My daughter is now 17 months old and I still have the occassional night sweats. Should I be concerned? Is this normal?

What can I do next?

I get night sweats when I take clomid (an ovulation drug) and for three months after the baby is born. This has happened three times with exclusive breastfeeding, and it has been the exact same pattern for all three kids. I'm accounting it to hormones, but have no idea which ones or what the mechanism is. I love womanhood :)Good luck1

If you are getting fairly wet - it's not normal. You need to go to the doctor.

HI C. when I was 23 my one overy was dried up like a peach seed the Dr. said it was like an 80 yr.old womens overies. I had it removed and shortly there after I started haveing night sweats. When I was 42 I had a complete hysterectomy and then I really had the sweats. Today I am 69 and the sweats are still with me and they are terrible as my hair gets soaking wet.
We had our daughter when I was almost 21 son when I was 30 and last son I was 32. Nothing has stopped them and when I told my Dr. my mother had them until she died at 73 and her remark was 'well you are not your mother'. I still have them I think a lot is because of anxiety??? who knows but hang in there and hopefully yours do not last like mine have. I don't think it is normal but where do I turn.

I had the same problem for the longest time after our 4th was born. It went on for 2 years (along with some other things) I had my thyroid tested several times and it was normal every time. I started to have problems with my eyes and they finally did a thyroid scan. It turns out I have Graves disease (autoimmune thyroid disease)which the doctor said thyroid problems VERY commonly start right after a pregnancy. I am just saying don't be so quick to dismiss the thyroid. I don't trust those blood tests at all. I hope it's just your hormones. Also, there are medications that can cause that as well. Are you taking anything that could be contributing? Just some thoughts for you. Your body is telling you something :) Good luck.

You don't say your age. Night sweats can happen during perimenopause (that time before we hit menopause). I had some in my mid 30's after having my last child. Then they stopped. Once in a blue moon I still get them. I'm sure they are tied into my monthly periods. If you are concerned mention them to your doctor at your annual visit. I also think they got better when I started a calcium/magnesium supplement.

I get them occasionally. I noticed it most when I was on birth control...and then when I went off I noticed it happened a LOT less but rarely it would happen inconjunction with my monthly cycle.

I have had severe night sweats for off and on for the past eight years. I have had my thyroid checked multiple times and after my pregnacies I suffered from post-partium thyroidosis. Right after the kids were born I had unexplainable and excessive diarreah. Also my metabolism was extremely high. Six months aftward the thyroid swung the other way. My metobolism shut down. I couldn't stop eating and my thyroid started to swell. I did take medication for while and everything eventually worked out. However, they told me the night sweats were perimenopause. It worth getting checked out. If the thyroid test comes back within normal limits but borderline, insist that your doc do a trial treatment for a couple of weeks or a month and see if that brings any improvement. I did this and it did stop and slow the hair falling out. Good Luck.

I had the night sweats until about 6 months after I stopped breastfeeding. My doctor said it was just hormone levels trying to get back to where they should be. I nursed until my daughter was 13 months old so my hormone levels had been out of wack for quite a while.
