Newborn SSN for Filing Taxes

My family is trying to do our taxes and the only thing we are missing is the social security number for our newborn. He was born on 12/10 and from what I understood it would take 6-8 weeks for us to get the number. Hopefully we will get it in a few days BUT...if we don't get it soon is there anything else we can do? Is having that SSN an absolute must for filing (I would think it would be, but I'm not a tax expert so who knows)? Anything we can do to expedite the process? Thanks!

And yes, I know the deadline isn't until April 15...I'm more concerned that it's been 6-8 weeks but we've not gotten anything yet.

What can I do next?

I'm no tax expert either but as far as I can tell and know of - yes - it is a requirement. It's to make sure that there aren't 2 families claiming the same child. And you have until April 15 to file so you have time to get it in. Just have everything done except for entering your son's SSN.

Congrats on your new son !

You do realize you have 2 and a half more months to file taxes, right?

just take the birth certificate and your id down to the social security office and they can give you a document with the number on it until you get the actual card.

You can always check the social security web site or call their information line. They may be able to tell you if they have assigned a number or sent it out yet.

My sister-in law filed with out their son (he was 12/11) and then filed an amendment when they did get the number. They had someone else do their taxes for them. Hope this helps.

In order to claim the child as a dependent for the tax credit you will need a ss#. When I applied for my boys it didn't take that long. Maybe two weeks. I would wait it out if you have already requested it. :)

All you need is his birth certificate and you can go to the Social Security office and get his number as it should be on file already.
