You can try warming the bed before you put him down. Something like a heating pad or hot water bottle on the sheet then pick it up before you put baby down.
I know the dangers, too. But my kids always slept better on their tummies.
My 1 week old only wants to sleep on people at night. During the day we can get him to sleep in a car seat or swing. We have bundled tightly, loosely, and not at all. He's breastmilk fed
Any suggestions? I don't mind waking every few hours- this isnt my first kid- I just can't sleep with him on me in a chair without fear because believe me- I know all the dangers.
If I could- he would go down on his stomach! He loves the pressure but again- I know the dangers

My daughter would only sleep on her tummy for the first week, then I read the Happiest Baby on the Block and one if it's suggestions was swaddling. After we started swaddling, she slept just fine by herself, we got one of the kiddopotomus swaddlers, I don't know if that's still the brand they go by or not, but they are awesome. They velcro and are easy to use.
Good luck!
Watch for signs of tiredness, and have baby in crib or bassinet by the second yawn. Baby will fall asleep all by herself. Newborns sleep based on biological necessity, meaning, they just sleep when tired. There is no need for swings or anything else...So, watch baby and put baby in her bed.
This is what I did.
Before bed:
First I swaddled tightly
Then put a heavier blanket under him in my arms
Then nursed (because he would usually fall asleep right after)
Then transfer to the bed, blanket and all,
With the tight swaddle, he wouldn't flop around as I transferred, and with the extra blanket, he didn't wake from the cold sheet, he still only felt the warm blanket under his head and on his back.
Good luck
My second baby just could not sleep on his back or side, even swaddled. I talked to the doctor and he told me to go ahead and put him on his stomach. Eighteen years later, he's still a stomach sleeper.
Do swaddle. That will help. You need to go ahead and put this baby down. He WILL evenutally sleep. Julie G has good advice as do SB and Mymission.
