I recently moved to Phoenix and I am newly married. I moved here from Oklahoma City and all of my family and friends are there and in the Austin Texas area. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can meet people...to make friends. Right now I am not working...my new husband works long hours and goes to school, therefore, I care for his 2 young children when we have them at our house for half of the week each week. I don't like feeling all alone out here with nobody to talk to...thank goodness for long distance...my mom calls me almost daily...without her..I think I would be really lost!

I would really recommend getting involved in the church of your choice. Most (if not all) congregations are full of supportive and caring people who share your values and goals, if you find a church you are comfortable with.

Welcome to the area. When I moved here 3 years ago, I felt the same way. I looked in the West Valley View constantly to find things to do and saw MOMS Clubs. I called and was directed to this website www.momsclub.org. It is an international organization geared towards stay at home or part time working moms. I have met some of my best friends through the Avondale MOMS Club. There is a club for nearly every city in Arizona. Check it out. I also went to the local library for all the different activities they offer. I also joined the MOMS group at my church. What part of Phoenix are you in? Feel free to contact me if you like. Volunteer........... Many theater companies need volunteers as do the theaters that house the performances. Call any performance house, (Herberger, Orphium, Symphany Hall, ect...)
and ask for their volunteer coordinator. If theater is not your thing, hospitals, food pantries and shelters are always looking for volunteers.
Also log on to volunteer.com and find the phoenix area and your areas of interest.
Get involved in some activities you enjoy....a gym, a club, church etc. There are lots of meetup groups on yahoo, go through the list to find your interests. There are many different ones! For example, I belong to a vegetarian one...there is usually a dinner scheduled at various restaurants around the area each week, and whoever wants to go, goes. I have made a few friends through that. Whatever interests you have, I am sure there must be a group! There are writing groups, manifesting groups, raw foods group, etc. Have fun looking! It can take awhile, but hang in there. Friends will come...keep desiring them, they will show up!
We recently moved here from FL and had a similiar situation. If you go on www.meetup.com, you can start up a free account and put in your interests. There are so many groups in every area. I was able to meet other moms in my area and they have been great! The first time I went to an event, I was pretty nervous but the girls were great and made me feel right at home! Good Luck!

azactivekids.com is a great resource for events and stuff around town to do with kids. I came here years and years ago all alone as well with no family or resources. I would love to hook up for new friends. I have a 8 year old and 4 year old girl. We live on the west side by the statium. Hope you can get a group going. Moms groups are always good start. and the websites the other suggested are great resources. Blessings to you for caring for your step-children, what a person of love you are.
