New Mom Needs Help with Weaning

I'm needing help weaning my son (3 months) from breast feeding. My question is how the mom is weaned? I've heard that binding your breasts could result in infection. How else is my milk to "dry" up?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the help, I think I've had enough advise and I contacted my Lactation consultant.

If you're staying at home, why bother weaning him immediately? I'm not a LaLeche nazi, but the easiest way for you and your breast to wean him is to SLOWLY introduce the bottle. And start with water so he still wants to nurse for milk. Otherwise you're going to be in a world of pain. Cabbage leaves actually do help ease the pain. My oldest son nursed until 9 months ... I was working at the time. So he only nursed at night. But my youngest nursed until he was 15 months. It sure saves money on formula and it helped me lose a ton of weight. Consider it. Good luck.

I am wondering why you are wanting to wean a 3 month old? They are still very much in need of your milk. And if you are a SAHM now, you are available to nurse your child as needed....
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends you nurse for at least 12 months, with 6 months being exclusively breast milk.

The best way to wean as to not risk plugged ducts and mastitis is to do it gradually. Drop one feeding and replace with a bottle. Continue this way for a week or two. Then replace another. Your body will gradually adapt to the decreased demand. You probably will feel full though. If you are uncomfortable, pump or express just a little...just enough to make you comfortable.

Hello Z.
To wean your son off the best way to do it is to stop certain time feedings...for example when your husband gets home and your son is hungry have him feed him with a bottle and just slowly wean him that way. So that way he is both bottle and breastfed. This way you won't get engorged and be in pain. Good luck and Congrats

My advice would be to wean slowly... cut down one feeding a day for a few days, then another. Try to keep the morning feeding and before bed feeding as long as possible. Your body will get used to producing less milk. It will be uncomfortable. Cold compresses help... warm compresses will feel good, but will increase milk supply.

You may want to contact a lactation consultant thru your local hospital or ask your insurance. Your milk will adjust as you cut down on feedings, WebMD is a source I have found to be trustworthy, cut and paste this link for info:

I'm not really sure why you want to wean a 3 month old, and I don't really have any advice that other people haven't already given. But if you want some great advice on weaning there are two message boards full of moms who've been there and would love to help you out. I had a terrible time nursing my daughter, and they helped me out and gave me tons of great advice and encouragement, and then helped me when I finally weaned. They also have forums for all other aspects of parenting, plus other things like crafts, entertainment, dealing with depression, etc.
