Jewish Family and Children Services of Greater Boston runs a number of new mom support groups throughout the Boston area. These are free and open to all--you do not have to be Jewish. Here is their website: http://www.jfcsboston.org/fcs/support_groups.cfm

I attended the one that is held in Arlington on Fridays at 10:00 at the Calvary Methodist Church on Mass Ave. The coordinator was wonderful, and it was a really great experience. I highly recommend it to everyone I hear who is having a baby. I'm still friends with many of the women that I have met through the group!

Hi H.,

I've tried to set up a new-mom's group through Craig's List and City Mommy, and had no luck (I'm 29 and due with my first later this month). I haven't tried meetup.com - but have heard about it. If you want to start something through this group, I'd be happy to join up.

Good luck!

I am so happy to see that another mother recommended the free, weekly support groups sponsored by Jewish Family & Children's Service, but just wanted to update the link from what was shared before: www.jfcsboston.org/MomsGroups
Thanks!

I definitely second the Isis Maternity vote. I never joined a Moms' group there, but I took several classes with my oldest child and they are wonderful there. You'd probably love the classes, so you might as well join a group too, and while you're at it, the gear tbey sell is the best!! I didn't go back for any classes with my youngest (poor second child gets shafted!!) but I missed it and still hope to enroll her in something this summer when I'm off from work. Good luck and enjoy this wonderful time in your life.

Hi H.,
Congrats & best of luck!! I would also highly recommend Isis Maternity. I participated in their new mom's group "New Beginnings" after my son was born a year ago and really enjoyed it. I learned a lot and connected with many other nice, young moms. I have since participated in several other classes they offer. They are a great resource in general and I recommend checking them out.
Good luck!

H.,
Congratulations!

You should look up the Family Network that services your area. There is a whole network of Networks out there that offer new parenting groups, playgroups, classes, a shoulder to lean on and much more! Many are listed on the Neighborhood Town Guides.
(Go to Medfordtownguide.com for example and look under schools)

Let me know where you live and I can get you the name of the right Family Network for your area.

Good luck!

J.

I've had some good luck finding folks using meetup.com

I'm in a group called "Bitchin' Mamas" and I've met some great women there. (there are groups for EVERYTHING on that site!!!)

Also, you can ask for referrals to new mother's groups when you're at the hospital (or birthing center).

And hey, good luck!!! If you need support, you know where to find us!! :)

I've also been to "Bitchin" Mamas" events, found on meetup.com, and they are great. Most are north of Boston and not necessarily accessible from public transportation. I also started taking classes at Isis Maternity when my son was 4 weeks old. The classes are a little pricey, as opposed to most of the Bitchin' Mamas events, which are usually free. But, it was invaluable to meet other moms whose babies were the same age as mine. In the early classes, there is a significant social/support component for the moms. I still have playgroups with several people I met in class. The website is www.isismaternity.com. They offer classes in several different locations. I wish you a speedy delivery. Good luck!
