Love my Honda Fit! Inexpensive, good gas mileage (35 mpg), good in the snow, and real roomy, plus a good drive.
I am wanting to purchase a different car that gets good gas mileage (25 city/34-40 hwy) Do any of you all have a car/small suv that you just love. Since I am driving 45 min to work each way I am looking for something a bit smaller than my full size car and that is a bit more practable (sp?). Something used about a 2008 or 2009 would be ideal for us right now.

I have a Pontiac Vibe that works well for my family. It has that small car feel, but it's super roomy. Has a nice sized hatchback and has hauled more things than we thought would fit! Not sure when they stopped making them. Might have been before 2008/2009. They're very reasonable price-wise and it does great on gas. I commute 40+ miles round trip every day and only need to get gas about once a week.
I also have a Pontiac Vibe and can't say enough how much we love it.
It's perfect for our 4 person family and recommend it highly!
My Honda Civic Hybrid gets 35-48...LOVE IT!
Ford Freestyle/Taurus X or a Ford FLEX. I have had and have both. Maybe a little larger than you'd like, but a great family car! I am a true believer in Fords...they are very reliable cars and have gotten me everywhere I need to go in this horrible snow.
Whatever you decide you should call my friend who owns his own dealership for pre-owned cars called Concierge Automotive Services. He can get you a car much cheaper than any other dealership because he doesnt have the overhead of a lot. His office is in Chesterfield but he has access to all of the car auctions and it's worth a phone call to him at least. We bought a car from him as well as had friends do the same. Our friends went to all of the dealerships and ended up buying from him. Phone ###-###-####, Steve. Tell him J. referred you.
I love my ford fusion hybrid....about 37 mpg.
I have a Nissan Maxima and love it, but the Altima is a beautiful car too, great gas mileage, stylish and sporty, great handling. The Toyota Camry is a great car, comfortable and great gas mileage, I've driven 2 for over a year.
I love my Nissan Altima and it does get good mileage. It's a nice size and easy to park, etc.
I Adore my Kia Sorento !! Good on mileage (or DH wouldnt have gotten it) LOL and its Roomy - Not BIG, but big enough ! Test Drive one and see how you like it. Ours is a 2011, but I'm sure the 08/09's are almost exactly the same :-)
I love my Subaru Forester. I live in Alaska and the all wheel drive in the winter is so nice.
I have a Honda Civic and I LOVE it! I get 30 mpg in the city. However, it might be to small for what your looking for, but I've heard the Accords are a good compromise if you want a little more room.
My best friend just got a Ford Focus and it gets 35 Mpg!!! Very nice little car. Great crash test ratings. I was pleasantly surprised just how nice this car really is.
we love our Honda Civic - it's a 1997 and has 135K on it but still runs great, around 28-30 mpg combined city and freeway (mostly city), and our family of 4 (9YO twins) uses it for almost all our everyday driving
My sister has a Honda Pilot she loves it, I would guess they have pretty good gas mileage
