We are trying to plan a short trip soon and so am looking for a good place to stay in new braunfels or san marcos area. We are thinking of doing schlitterbahn one day so leaning more towards new braunfels to stay. Hotel with free breakfast that is worth it would be nice! Also was wondering if austin children's museum is worth the money and time for boys 7-9 years old or San Antonio children's museum (what are pros/cons of both)? TIA

What can I do next?

New Braunsfels has a brand new children's museum. I haven't been inside but the outside looks awesome. I remember the Austin children's museum being a bit small and dated, but I took a 1 yr old and was not looking at it through the lens of an older child.

Austin Children's Museum seems to be geared more toward younger kids... (pre-school age, maybe 1st-2nd grade?) There are a few activities that may be based toward older ones, but I see more young activities there.

Another alternative (I haven't been there for SEVERAL years, though... probably 15?) is The Austin Nature and Science Center....

Our favorite area! ACM is amazing and your 7yo for sure will love it. There are also children's museums in New Braunfels, and two in San Antonio (the Witte Museum has a Treehouse area just for kids and it's AWESOME!!!) It's days worth of fun. Consider staying in a homewood suites where you get a great room, and some offer both breakfast AND dinner (on weeknights). Totally worth it! You can probably find coupons for the museums online somewhere.... or consider buying a membership to the FW museum, which has reciprocal membership at the ACM and Witte.(That's how we got in for "free" this summer).
PS I've recently launched a children's museum in Denton, Texas called Explorium Denton! Look for us on facebook and online, at exploriumdenton.org .... we're just getting started so it'll be a couple years till we're open for business, but I'd love to make contact with as many people as possible to get our name out there.
Enjoy your trip!!!!

I wouldn't take your boys to the Austin children's museum. It's definitely for younger kids. I don't know about the rest! Have fun!

Not sure when you are planning on being down here, but this event would be great for your boys. It is the LEGO, KidFest.. It would be way more fun than the childrens museum..

yeah, McKenna CM is really for younger kids, unless yours likes train tracks and a mini grocery store with little carts to push around. The SA CM is a little more interactive, but it will take your kids 30 mins to go through it and they'll be done.

Look into tubing down the river. That is AWESOME (not exactly white rapids but nice and relaxing). Get a cooler tube where you can put drinks and snacks in it (or you can do the white trash thing and bungee cord a cooler to a regular tube lol).

You can't go wrong with Country Inn & Suites or Hampton Inn for nice rooms and excellent breakfasts but San Marcos/New Braunsfels has some great B&Bs. We stayed in a few but for the life of me I can't think of the names only bc I wasn't the one who booked them or drove to them. There is one house for rent right off the river in NB that slept 17 of us...there were 4 families and we each got our own rooms and a HUGE living area with an attached screened in porch. I think the property has smaller homes but that one we stayed in was NICE.

There are tons of hiking trails in that area - really beautiful walks because its in the hill country (my most favorite part of Texas :) ) Have fun ya'll!

Hello, I would recommend staying in Gruene,Tx. (Gruene Homestay Inn is rally nice) It has really nice bed & Breakfast and the town is really nice. It's only about 10-15 min from the water park and has really nice restaurants as well. Don't know about the museum but San Antonio is so pretty that any place should be fun. Funny, we moved away from Keller 1 yr ago and really miss it. Have fun in your vacations!
