I am exclusively breasfeeding my 4 month old and I have been feeling nausea for a week now. I did have unprotected sex once with my husband when my baby was 2.5-3 mths old so i thought maybe i might be pregnant and took 3 pregnancy tests, all of which have been negative. I am not experiencing any other symptoms only nausea. I am wondering can breastfeeding affect test results?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies for all your reponses and advice. I increased my calories and fluids and the nausea is alot better. This never happened with my first child so this was of concern to me, I guess because I stopped breastfeeding the older one at 4 months... Anyway I did take a few more tests just to be sure I wasn't pregnant and they were negative. Thank you ladies again!

What is more likely is that the breastfeeding is causing the nausea :) It is not unheard of for you to be pregnant, but it is fairly unlikely since breastfeeding reduces your risk of getting pregnant and you have had 3 negative tests. Try drinking a can of sugar soda and some crackers 30 minutes prior to breastfeeding next time and see if that helps. Just so you know breastfeeding nausea and morning sickness can feel exactly the same.

Good luck!

I would act as though you are pregnant until you confirm you're not. Breastfeeding does not protect you from getting pregnant....and it may be too early to pick up the hormone for the test if you are pregnant......good luck!

I would get bouts of nauseousness while breastfeeding as well. I also had 3 blood tests to confirm I wasn't preggo, but it wasn't because I was worried, just protocol before some medical procedures. Anyway, they were all negative and w/ in a few days I would feel back to normal. Weird to me, but I guess it's normal.

I agree with Starr. You very likely are having some temporary blood sugar issues. I did while breastfeeding. Remember, it takes a lot out of you. Eat small healthy snacks or meals frequently & drink up. I used to have cut up fruits & veggies on hand while I was nursing, especially with my twins. I figured for a year they were literally sucking the life out of me. For me, the nausea started around 4ish months, too. I think that was just long enough of a slow down period. I started to feel so good physically that I was doing more and didn't adjust my calorie intake. So the nausea hit pretty hard & fast. Breastfeeding will not affect test results, though, and if you took 3 (spread out a bit I'm guessing?) and all were negative, I'd bet that you are NOT pregnant. Eat. See what happens. By the way, my OB recommended drinking Slim Fast for snacks...it's tasty, has nutrients & is calorie controlled, and is quick & convenient when you're busy or nursing. Good luck!

Nope. If you took the tests far enough apart, they should all be 99% accurate (or whatever the box claims. It might be worthwhile to check with your care provider just to make sure.
