My son is in Kindergarten and doing well. He could use a little help with reading. What did you feel like you couldn't have lived without? Books, videos, games, etc.

What can I do next?

Try the website www.starfall.com. I am a kindergarten teacher and recommend it to all my families. There are different levels, so your son can "move up" as he masters each level. The website has phonics and reading activities. You can also google "reading games" and see what websites you come up with! Have fun!

Learning Leap Frog Activity Center where you work on letter recognition - caps & lower case, letter sounds, WRITING letters, etc. GREAT!! WE used it for about four years before she outgrew it. She's at third grade reading level and in first grade.

If you can, make some time for just him and let him pick his favorite book. Rhymes and music are always fun to learn. I would turn everything else off (TV, videogames, etc).

My son didn't and still doesn't like to read. I got him a phonics program I believe it is called Fast Track Action Reading developed by a teacher in Alaska. It really helped my son and we were able to bring his reading level up 2 grades in 15 months, while teaching my then 4 yo daughter to read. My son reads only the things that he has to and that interest him. For example, he was not allowed to play a new video game unless he read the instruction book first. I suggest teaching him the phonics (Ah, Ba, Ca's is what we call it) and then find what interests him and have a sharing reading time.
Something else that I use to do, is that I knew what words my kids were learning to read and while I was reading, I would have them read the words that they should know. I helps them to learn to follow along as well as reinforcing the words that they have learned.
Introduce the phonics to your younger child, as a result, you may have an early reader on your hands.

Hi L....the most important thing is to feed their brains the right foods. Are your children taking vitamins? When will your 1 yr old turn 2?

My husband and I searched for several months for a vitamin our children would take. We did find one and now they ask for it. I would do gummies or sugar filled vitamins.

We love a vitamin called Vemma. You can check it out at www.myvemma.com/jasonmartin or email me at ____@____.com.

I am not an ecxellent reader either but I want it so bad for my children. They are ages 4, 3 and 2. :-)

I couldn't live with out BOOKS.
I tutor 1st and 2 nd graders reading at the local grade school. I talk to the kids about what they do at home , most tell me they watch a lot of movies they check out at the library. The parents don't sit and make them read.Reading is very important and learning to sound out the words is really important. Video's and games that just entertain don't teach anything so I would put a hour limit on them.Read to him and let him read to you. Get books for his age group. His teacher could help you with that.Nearly all of the children I have tutored have been boys in the last few years only one girl and she had vision problems and once she got glasses she had no more reading problems. You might get him to read to his baby brother every day, easy board books he can show the pictures to and read the words for. To a child that is a game. When I worked at Head start we used words as fun, made place cards and had them every where, Door, chair, window, a big red stop sign, table, books on the book shelve, lamp Etc. You can do this at home.It does help a lot. They see the object and read the word because they know what the object is.Good luck.

My daughter is also in Kindergarten and recently we worked out a system that's been going pretty well. I got a set of the sight words flash cards from Walmart, a lined writing tablet, and our copy of one fish two fish. Every day we do her homework and then we spend about 15 minutes with either reading or writing. On mondays and wednesdays I have her read me two or three pages of One Fish Two Fish. On tuesdays and thursdays we do the flash cards ( I use all the ones from her sight words list that she brought home from school plus a few that she can sound out) and then I take the flash cards and lay them out into 2 or 3 sentences that she can copy to practice her writing. Fridays she gets to pick which one she wants to do. Also, at bedtime we pick an easy story to read together and trade off, with me reading one page and her reading the next. I haven't found anything else to be terribly helpful because the interactive shows whe just watches like they are regular cartoons. Between the Lions on PBS does seem to help her understand some of the different rules about letter sounds though, like th says the and ay says A etc.

I found the Pajama Sam video games very helpful with not only reading but spelling etc. They offer a fun story line along with attention getting challanges. They come in a varity of age levels so you can advance your son as needed in areas that he may excel in. I've used these with not only my children but my grandchildren.
