So What Happened?

Thank you to all that responded to my request for help.....I decided to go with an Olympic theme with it being the 2008 Olympic year.....we are going to have an "athletes" parade , a reading of the Olympic Oath, lighting of the torch and Let the games begin...each cclass is going to represent a country,,,we will have an awards ceremony at the end....all classes with receive at least a bronze but can earn up to silver and gold as a group......I have several events in mind but too many to list......

Wish me luck...I will let you know how it goes.

The book _There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom_ by Louis Sachar is a great resrouce for fun races! I think it's towards the end of the book during a birthday party, but I don't remember exactly off the top of my head. If you have a copy of the book, it shouldn't be too hard to find the section I'm talking about.

water balloon relay races are always fun if the weather permits field day to be outside. Keep them small and have the kids run with them under their chin then they have to pass it to the next team mate from chin to chin.

One neat idea our school does (grades 3-5) is have matching colored shirts for each class. This year they actually had them made, but the last few years they made them. Each child brought in a plain white t-shirt. If some aren't able to, many parents are willing to buy a pack of 3 white t-shirts, they are inexpensive enough. Then each class (or you could do by grade if you are doing a very large group such as grades k-8) picked a color. Each child scrunched up their t-shirt and put rubber bands all over it. One mom from each class took them home and put them through their washing machine with some dye, sold in the grocery store. Very easily done, takes one load to wash and dry, when you take the rubber bands off they are all tie dyed a bit different and the children were so proud of them, and really gave them some team spirit!

How about a scavenger hunt or relay races?

I am going to attach myself to Hillarie's star and suggest a scavenger hunt
With a twist depending on the ages (I am guessing it is for all grades)Start with a ridlde that gives a clue to Mrs. Smith's classroom then Mrs. Smith will give each team the answer which leads to the next riddle and or hop skip jump(hence the relay race)to the next clue/answer or riddle.
I think you catch my drift.
You have actually touched on one of my dreams/fun ideas for adults to do I really can't take credit for it there is a movie about it not sure of the name but it has to be about 25 years old

Have each class come up with a mascott. They take the mascott with them to every event. Relay races are always fun. 3 legged, egg, patato sack, hula hoop, balloon, rolling a ball with a stick.
